Post Doc Position, Biological Sciences
Location:
Pennsylvania
Posted:
July 20, 2016
Position Type:
Full Time
Reference:
WD36668
Basic qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a PhD with experience in aging and/or skeletal muscle physiology or metabolism. Experience in applied physiology, exercise physiology, molecular biology, stem cell biology, or a related discipline is required.

Preferred qualifications:
Same as above.

Details:
The area of research will cover the mechanisms by which skeletal muscle and muscle innervation is repaired after damage and maintains muscle functional status. The mechanisms by which factors such as age, muscular dystrophies, and muscle activity regulate these processes are of particular interest.

The MM DPU has established experimental systems at the cutting edge of modern skeletal muscle research. The fellow will be able to work in two main areas of expertise in the MM DPU.
1. Muscle Repair Biology.
Characterization of factors that speed recovery of functional muscle, the regulation of regeneration in the background of anabolic/catabolic signaling in muscle, how pathophysiology impacts skeletal muscle regeneration and muscle stem cell activity.

2. Skeletal Muscle Mass and Performance. We have developed precise and reproducible methods to measure skeletal muscle performance in vivo and ex vivo with isolated muscles. In addition we have developed models of clinically relevant skeletal muscle atrophy including nerve damage induced atrophy, immobilization induced atrophy, and compensatory hypertrophy. Areas of research for a postdoctoral fellow could include identifying mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle protein turn-over in the context of disuse, mechanisms that regulate re-innervation following nerve damage, and mechanisms linking muscle activity to anabolic signaling pathways.
