The Office Product Group Research and Design has an immediate opening for a Principal Research Manager to lead the Skype Consumer team and research work in our Redmond studio. Bring an awesome portfolio with you to inspire us. The ideal candidate is an experienced design research leader with a passion for shipping products. They will have demonstrated strength delivering through all stages of product development from initial ideation to shipping and supporting multiple product versions. This role balances the tactical need to drive micro usability tests to validate design decisions AND strategic research that will influence differentiation strategy for Skype.

Primary responsibilities include:

Know our customer
Have, encourage, and lead people and processes with a growth mindset
Ability to lead and deploy research that is inherently inclusive
Build empathy for human needs within the Skype Consumer organization
Define and evolve the group’s understanding of the target users who are at the center of all design decisions
Influence all phases of the product design process including conceptual development, interaction design, and implementation
Define our target users and a user-centered goal framework
Create scorecards that communicate user satisfaction metrics
Partner with Skype Consumer leaders to translate business goals into tangible user experience objectives
Work closely with marketers, designers, program managers, and engineers in a highly collaborative environment to design product and feature interactions
Have a clear and confirmed point of view on trends and competitive benchmarks
The position requires the need to be organized, detail-oriented, and results-driven
Using research to help determine what the differentiation strategy should be for Skype as it related to both work and consumer markets
Leverage and other micro usability test approaches to drive conclusive decision making on the experience
Ability to recruit and manage at least two more junior researchers

Qualified candidates should have:

At least 8 years of experience in design research leadership for high-quality consumer products for high-volume global markets
Minimum of 5 years of experience in lead and management roles
A hands-on approach to design research leadership
Strong project management, communication and presentation skills
Strong written and oral communication skills are required
Strong interest in and aptitude for learning and developing new research approaches
In addition to design research strengths, hands-on experience in a secondary field such as interaction design, software engineering, or product management is highly desired
Education requirements include either an MA/MS or PhD in psychology, human factors, or related field, or a BA/BS in a research related field with significant academic or industry experience
