Principal Engineer I - Data Scientist

The Principal Engineer- Data Scientist will be responsible for designing, building and extracting large and complex data sets while thinking strategically about uses of data and how data use interacts with data design. This person will work with technical operations staff on system design and configuration. Works with design teams and advises team leaders.


• Define, create and track metrics for monitoring network utilization and capacity
• Forecast traffic growth using mathematical models and interactions with product teams introducing new products and features.
• Design strategy to model and predict capacity needed to meet steady state and worst-case failure traffic demands
• Design complex spreadsheets and databases to track and analyze capacity related data.
• Partner with operations engineers and engineering architects to optimize traffic flows and network topology.
• Design reports including high-level dashboard views to convey key network capacity metrics.
• Lead critical meetings with senior leaders to present past and future network growth metrics and the impact on the network.


• 10 Years experience working in large service provider environment
• Ability to create and apply sophisticated mathematical models to forecast traffic growth
• Knowledge in SQL, Tableau, and other statistical analysis tools
• Deep understanding of routing and peering architectures
• Working knowledge of BGP, ISIS, OSPF, MPLS
• Experience in design, implementation, administration and use of capacity analysis tools that gather statistics using SNMP, Netflow, and deep-pack-inspection.
• Expert knowledge with big data: processing, filtering, and presenting large quantities of data.
• Expert knowledge with statistical tools and analysis, regression modeling and forecasting, time series analysis.
• Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Alteryx)
• Experience using one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, Java, C++)
• Ability to write SQL scripts for analysis and reporting ( SQL, MySQL

• Advanced Degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Engineering, Math, Statistics, Computer Science or related work experience

• 10 years engineering work experience
• 10 years Project management work experience

• Knowledge of company products and services
• Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Alteryx)

• Industry and vendor specific certifications and training preferred (Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, etc.)
