J&J Global Services, LLC., is looking for a Principal Sustaining Engineer. This position will be based in Irvine, CA.

Work of the Medical Devices Supply Chain supports a multitude of product platforms, new products and delivery systems that are used in a wide range of procedures throughout the healthcare industry, including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, minimally invasive surgery, hospital sterilization, clinical laboratory testing, diabetes management, joint replacement surgery and vision care.


The Principal Sustaining Engineer will:

  • Act as sustaining engineer for our external manufacturing partners and work independently to maintain the technical qualification of suppliers and supplier products and processes (either obsolescence driven or as part of a tech transfer/life cycle management) and work with suppliers to resolve complex technical issues that may require the development of new or improved techniques or procedures
  • Serve as the technical lead to manage large scale, complex multiple projects
  • Influence development of business strategies. Initiate and manage process excellence projects to improve quality, yields and value received from the supply base. 
  • Identify, characterize, and document all key process variables included in Design Transfer. 
  • Partner with the New Product Development community to provide technology assessment and supplier technical support, supporting new product development where (potential external manufacturing is involved) and other "product lifecycle" activities, designing and overseeing experiments, applying statistical analyses to evaluate results and preparing technical reports.
  • Support Operations management and Engineering in leading tactical activities implementing corporate initiatives and/or departmental objectives.
  • Act as a liaison between R&D, Technical Support and Operations to ensure design changes for Finished Goods are developed appropriately for a manufacturing environment.
  • Lead or support troubleshooting activities, validations, and product/process improvements, compile and evaluate test data to perform root cause analysis of failures and direct and participate in special projects as requested by Management.
  • Partner with Contract Manufacturers to build strong relationships and enhance the quality and effectiveness of suppliers. 


  • The qualified candidate for the position will have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with at least 8 years of related work experience.
  • MBA and/or APICS certification is desirable.
  • Experience in electronics and/or electromechanical assembly of electronic devices, as well as small and/or large scale production of electronic devices is highly desired.
  • Strong Project Management experience and skills are required.
  • Technical report writing, statistical analysis and data evaluation is required.
  • Must possess the ability to define complex issues and execute work that involves complex problems.
  • Proven track record of driving innovation (within functional area) is desired.
  • Ability to influence others to achieve business objectives and excellent written and oral communication skills is required.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and the ability to fluently change priorities based upon business need.
  • Serve as the technical expert for supplier development engineering and assigned area of expertise, with conceptual knowledge of all technical functions and business areas.
  • Experience in the regulated work environment of the medical device industry experience is preferred.
  • Experience in test systems for the manufacture of electronic devices is preferred.
  • Experience in plastic injection molding is preferred.
  • Due to having a broad supplier base within Spanish speaking in countries, fluency in Spanish is an asset.

This position is in Irvine, CA and may require up to 35% travel, domestic and/or international.
