We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Principal Scientist with hands-on experience in antibody discovery to join the Antibody Generation group at the Merck Biologics unit in Palo Alto. Functional responsibilities will include antibody lead generation to support biologics programs using immunization-based technologies across multiple therapeutic areas.

The ideal candidate must have solid hands-on experience with designing and executing antibody discovery projects. Previous experience developing strategies against difficult targets, utilizing multiple platform strategies, and managing external discovery collaborations is a must. The ideal candidate would also have prior experience leading antibody discovery projects either internally or externally.

The candidate is expected to be up-to-date on advanced technologies for antibody discovery and actively apply new concepts as appropriate to continuously improve functional area capabilities.

The selected candidate will be a hands-on manager of direct reports and may need to work at the bench as needed.

  • PhD with a minimum of 8 years of related experience or a MS with a minimum of 10 years of related experience in cell biology, immunology, biochemistry or a related discipline of relevant experience in antibody discovery

  • Expertise in antibody discovery, such as hybridoma generation, B-cell cloning or display technologies in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology or academic setting
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience managing direct reports with a proven track record of developing careers
