Job Description
The department of Comparative Animal Research (CAR) at Amgen Inc., Thousand Oaks CA, an AAALAC accredited research facility, is seeking a Laboratory Animal Veterinarian with a research focus to join a dynamic, fast-paced team overseeing all aspects of the veterinary care program for multiple animal species, while providing technical and scientific support for multiple therapeutic areas. We partner with more than 200 research staff, in various therapeutic areas, to perform preclinical research in our quest to develop novel human therapeutics.

Job Duties include:
Member of the CAR team providing:
• Leadership and training in animal model development
• Act as a scientific liaison between Therapeutic Areas/Scientific Groups and CAR to ensure development and execution of projects/programs
• Oversight/Governance of in -vivo team capable of designing, developing, executing and presenting data to project teams
  • Direct participation in in vivo surgical model development to deliver for the Amgen portfolio
  • Design studies utilizing the 3R's (refine, replace and reduce)
  • Provide leadership and direction to a group of in vivo surgeons on both rodent and large animal surgical model development
• Expertise in the writing and review of Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) protocols
• Collaborate and partner with clinical veterinary staff to provide a program of adequate veterinary care and preventive medicine
• Direct support for development and maintenance of guidelines, processes and procedures to meet federal, state and local regulatory requirements and AAALAC accreditation standards
• On-Call Support (Share duties)

5%-10% Domestic travel

Basic Qualifications
DVM degree and 2 years of Medical Science/Scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications
• DVM-PhD with 5 years' experience in animal model development
• DVM with 10 years' experience developing complex animal models in a drug development setting
• Board Certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)
• Licensed to practice in one + state of the USA and ability to obtain California veterinary license within 1 year of hire
• 2+ years of postdoctoral training or experience in laboratory animal medicine
• 1+ years of clinical practice experience
• Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to successfully partner, collaborate and navigate complex relationships with research and CAR staff from diverse educational and technical backgrounds
• Ability to manage and mentor high performing teams
• Prior experience in one or more of the areas listed below:
• Experience in designing studies and providing oversight of in vivo research
• Training staff in technical procedural skills for multiple animal species
• Ability to perform surgery in multiple species
• Imaging modalities (optical, PET, CT, MRI)
• Vivarium Biosecurity Programs
• Institutional Animal Care and Use protocol writing and review process
• Development of disease or surgical animal models
