 The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for the following:

  • The design and development aspects of a series of projects through all phases of the product development process; planning and executing projects or portions of projects from concept through commercialization, and into post-market surveillance.
  • He/she will execute specific design projects based on surgeon inputs, and will work closely with sales and with cross-functional team members (marketing, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, supply chain, etc.) as well as with surgeons, to establish clinical inputs and solve design problems utilizing CAD techniques, rapid and conventional prototyping, and other available technologies.
  • Position requires the ability to accurately capture and translate user needs and clinical requirements into innovative, novel, and robust design solutions that can be comprehensively validated.  Candidate must be able to apply knowledge of mechanical design processes to develop concepts, generate designs, and facilitate the manufacture of medical instruments and implants to meet the needs of surgeons & patients.
  • The Product Development Engineer will develop layouts using CAD and tolerance analyses utilizing GD&T, and will participate in design evaluations (such as engineering calculations and FEA, simulated use testing, dry labs and wet tissue labs, etc.)  He/she will also support and generate the documentation of clinical and surgical technique observations, to create meaningful design solutions.
  • This individual will also be involved with development and execution of design verification and validation plans and testing and will support regulatory review for US and global registration efforts as needed.
  • He/she will participate in the design and development of complex mechanisms and will work with manufacturing engineers and/or suppliers to optimize designs for manufacturability and assembly, and will produce functioning prototypes and supporting production documentation.
  • He/she should demonstrate proficiency in the application of design controls and development processes, and support the project leader with aspects of the project management functions including scope definition, and contingency planning.
  • This individual should have a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage a varied workload, exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills and interface effectively with project teams, management and surgeons.
  • The Product Development Engineer will also be expected to develop a working knowledge of our product lines and detailed knowledge of various spinal pathologies, and will be an active participant in sales training and/or in providing ongoing product support to the field as needed.


Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering or other technical discipline is required. An Advanced Degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in engineering is required (not including co-op, internship and research).  
  • Prior experience in New Product Development role is preferred.
  • Experience working within a regulated industry is preferred; and Medical Device, Spine or Orthopedic experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of various types of manufacturing, mechanisms, materials, proper tolerancing, drafting standards, and GD&T is required.
  • The ability to develop creative solutions for design problems is required.
  • The ability to work and execute projects tasks within a cross functional environment is required.
  • Prior experience working cross functional project teams, bringing products from concept to launch, is preferred. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, as is the ability to effectively communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals, surgeons, customers and/ or teams.
  • Baseline knowledge of reviewing and assessing patents and intellectual property is preferred.
  • Proficiency utilizing MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) is required. 
  • Knowledge of CAD software is required; Unigraphics/NX is preferred, or Creo (Pro-E), Solid Works, AutoCAD, etc.
  • The ability to look beyond conventional solutions and familiarity with technologies extending beyond traditional orthopedic therapies and products is preferred.
  • The ability to work within a cadaver lab and operating room setting is required.
  • This position is to be located in Raynham, MA and may require up to 10% travel.
