The Product Development Sustaining Engineer, Spine will execute broad based end to end product development support and design history file documentation within the Sustaining Engineering Team. Assignment length for the Product Development Sustaining Engineer role to last approximately 24 to 36 months.

The Sustaining Engineer will plan and perform tasks for multiple product platforms that are in the post commercialization phase using strong business acumen and problem solving skill sets. This role will have a focus on the product performance characterization aspects of the product platforms and will lead the technical activities related to planning and executing testing activities as needed to support ongoing supply chain strategy and design transfer activities. Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Solving design problems utilizing CAD techniques, rapid/conventional prototyping and other available technologies
  • Assessing the effect of design changes on mechanical performance and setting acceptance criteria for evaluation
  • Developing layouts and tolerance studies utilizing GD&T, and will participate in performing design evaluations (such as FEA, simulated use testing, dry labs and wet tissue labs etc.)
  • Operating within quality system procedures, and will support regulatory processes for global registration efforts.
  • Solving technical problems related to fixture, test methodology, unexpected failures and challenging test setups
  • Planning, directing, and conducting laboratory and field testing of products and/or components including construction of test systems to simulate use for lab performance and durability testing
  • Author test methods and protocols to meet industry and company standards under guidance
  • Author lab reports and analyze data utilizing good documentation practices and statistical tools
  • Working with Quality engineers to develop or update design control documentation within multiple PLM systems
  • Working with manufacturing and supply chain to optimize designs and documentation for manufacturability and assembly to support ongoing supply chain  strategy

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required. Mechanical degree is preferred.
  • A Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of new product development experience and/or engineering experience is required.
  • Experience with medical devices (Spine or Orthopedic) is preferred. Regulated industry experience is preferred.
  • Strong track record utilizing computer aided design (CAD) and statistics to develop a product is required.
  • Experience with Unigraphics or ProE/Creo and Design Excellence/ Six Sigma methodologies is preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of various types of manufacturing, mechanisms, materials, proper tolerance, drafting standards, GD&T, test equipment and statistics are required. 
  • Proficiency utilizing the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, project etc.) is required. Proficiency in Mini-Tab is preferred.
  • The candidate should have a demonstrated background in developing creative solutions to solve design and testing problems. 
  • The ability to perform within a cross functional team bringing products from concept to launch is preferred.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals, surgeons, customers and/ or teams, and work effectively as a team member. 
  • The ability to review and critically assess historic design history files and other forms of documentation is preferred.
  • This position is located in Raynham, MA and will require up to 10% domestic and international travel.
