Position Description

Major Purpose:

• Lead execution of the category strategy to profitably grow the business and directly contribute to the development of future category strategies.

Impact on the Organization:

• Directly responsible for category sales and profit growth.

Major Responsibilities:

Product Line Management

• Product Assortment & Lifecycle: Select and manage the product offering, including national brand and private label strategy, from introduction and stocking status to discontinuation

• Product Line Reviews: Lead product line reviews to ensure profitable sales growth

• Pricing Strategy: Manage all list prices in line with product category strategy to be market competitive while driving top-line sales and maximizing profitability

• Cost Management: Negotiate all elements of assigned supplier relationships to ensure lowest total cost of procurement, including: product cost, performance, rebates, etc.

• Product Marketing: Develop and execute marketing initiatives to drive top-line revenue growth by working with suppliers and internal business partners

• Merchandising: Define catalog and online merchandising content and layout

• Issue Resolution: Resolve quality/service issues and ensure best customers experience through working with suppliers and internal business partners

• Inventory & Logistics: Drive supplier performance to meet inventory/logistics objectives working with internal business partners

Supplier Relationship Management

• Supplier Selection: Lead the evaluation and selection of product suppliers

• Relationship management: Own the relationship between supplier and all applicable Grainger departments including Supply Chain

• Contract Negotiation/Management: Negotiate and manage the contractual agreement between Grainger and the supplier

• Supplier Performance: Define, execute and/or monitor specific performance metrics and goals relevant to each supplier relationship

Additional Responsibilities:

• International/Domestic Alignment: Leverage the multi-brand/global scale of Grainger to improve performance across various international and domestic business units

• Global Line Reviews: Leverage global scale to ensure Grainger has the best offer and the best cost across international business units

• Continuous Improvement: Lead and/or support cross-functional continuous improvement initiatives and other special projects to improve the overall business

• Subject Matter Expert: Be the subject matter expert for the product categories by leveraging demonstrated industry knowledge/insight and through ongoing customer interaction, market research and participation in industry trade events

Position Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required, MBA preferred

• Minimum 5 years of experience in product management or related fields

• Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and influence without direct authority

• Strong project management skills

• Strong analytical skills and intellectual curiosity

• Strong negotiation skills

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Proficient with Microsoft Office programs

• Solid understanding of finance

• Solid understanding of supply chain logistics

• Detail orientation

• A proven problem solver

• International experience a plus

Travel:

• Up to 10% travel, both domestic and international

Work Relationships:

Internal: (Individual Contributors up to Directors)

• Product Management and Supply Chain Organization, including purchasing, logistics, and inventory management

• International Procurement Teams (Grainger Global Sourcing)

• Finance, Brand Segment, Marketing and Sales Organizations

• International and Domestic Business Units
