The Prolene Operator safely and efficiently executes daily tasks related to production of Prolene non-absorbable suture. Main taks include rack winding, heat set, auto cutting, inspection, testing, and completion of preventative maintenance activities and material handling as needed.  Main responsibliites include:


  • Operates heat set oven
  • Performs minor maintenance to equipment
  • Performs weekly preventative maintenance on auto inspect/cut equipment
  • Lift racks of 5-10 lbs. and places into rackwinder
  • Performs scheduling of production lots
  • Obtains departmental supplies
  • Creates production orders and tickets on computer
  • Performs tipping on fine size Prolene
  • Rack winds fine size Prolene
  • Performs inventory of material
  • Mixes solution and tips fine size Prolene
  • Sets up and Operator Auto inspect/cut equipment
  • Follows proper line clearance procedures
  • Runs multiple Auto inspect/cut machines as one cell
  • Inspects, cuts and packages material
  • Identifies defects and removes from lots
  • Cuts material to required lengths
  • Packages material and label
  • Maintains accurate records
  • Measures tips on tipped material
  • Obtains samples from lot for testing
  • Operates required testing equipment
  • Maintains accurate records
  • Releases QA accepted material

  • Works in team environment behaving in a CREDO based respectful manner.
  • Complies with all federally regulated programs
  • Adheres to J&J environmental and safety policies and guidelines
  • Complies with all job specific safety procedures and utilizes PPE when necessary
  • Complies with quality system requirements as defined within procedures and instructions
  • Uses test equipment (Starett Gauge, Mitutoyo Gauge, Microscope, Instron,etc) where applicable
  • Utilizes applicable software systems as needed for the job (e.g. ComplianceWire, ADAPTIV, etc.)
  • Consistently meets required work performance targets (RE’s), if applicable
  • Supports LEAN and Six Sigma Initiatives
  • Supports Maintenance Excellence (ME2) including 6S and Operator Asset Care
  • Accurately completes records as defined within the job procedures (e.g. manual and/or electronic documentation)
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned
  • Consistently meets required Training due date targets
  • Performs general housekeeping function
  • Cleans racks and rackwinder periodically
  • Supports Plant Diversity Process
  • Ensures safe working conditions and practices in the department
  • Follows written specifications to manufacture product
  • Uses associated test equipment
  • Maintains certification for testing
  • Packages and prepares product for shipment
  • Demonstrates teamwork with identifying, evaluating, and resolving problems within the department

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 1+ years of relevant work experience required
  • Basic computer proficiency skills required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Problem solving skills required
  • Ability to keep accurate and legible records required
  • Basic math skills required (add, subtract, multiply, divide, percentages, etc.)
  • Must be self-motivated, self-directed, and have the ability to work under minimum supervision in a collaborative team environment
  • Must be willing and able to work in a stressful fast paced environment
  • Mechanical aptitude preferred
  • Experience with CAMSTAR or Blue Hill helpful
  • Knowledge of hand tools helpful
  • Must be willing and able to meet the physical demands of this job which include: lifting/carrying 0-30 lbs., lifting ground to waist, lifting waist to overhead, overhead work including pushing/pulling/reaching, standing, sitting, walking, and repetitive hand motions including simple grasp/fine manipulation
  • Vision screening requirements: Far point acuity (microscope), near point acuity (looking at samples), color perception (color distinction) with blue and clear
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime as needed
  • Must be willing and able to work the 3 shift (10:45pm – 7:15am)
