The Reaction Engineering Lab (REL) within the Chemical Engineering R&D (CERD) department is seeking highly motivated and technically focused individuals who are looking for an opportunity to lead a Technology Lab responsible for solving technically challenging reaction engineering problems in support of Merck's pipeline. The REL is tasked with identifying, developing, and deploying tools and methodologies aimed at improving the manner in which chemical reactions are characterized, understood, rationally designed, and ultimately scaled up.
The group will have a strong focus on generating mechanistic understanding of reaction systems, process modeling, and data-rich experimentation including application of process analytical technologies (PAT). There will also be an emphasis on the development of flow/continuous processes, including the exploration of emerging technologies (e.g., photo- and electrochemical transformations) and design of appropriate reactors for interrogating and scaling up these systems. As the leader of this group, the incumbent is expected to set the strategy for the group which includes identifying and prioritizing new technology investment opportunities, establishing a model for collaboration with complementary groups in Process R&D, and developing a plan for mentoring/training the broader staff to build associated competencies.
The role is intended to have a heavy hands-on, lab-based component with the incumbent carrying out independent research which involves conceiving, designing, planning, and implementing advanced studies aimed at further establishing these types of metholodogies, as well as supporting CERD's broader strategic and tactical needs in the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients. In this capacity, the incumbent is expected to make scientific contributions to research programs of major importance to the Research and Manufacturing Divisions, including offering the opportunity for the introduction of disruptive and transformative process development technologies into the organization. This position is intended to blend lab-based experimentation with mechanistic modeling, providing rapid solutions to complex process design issues.
A high level of innovation, creativity, and self-initiative along with the ability to plan and execute technically insightful experiments are expected. Strong communication skills as well as a supportive and mentoring nature are also critical to success in this role, as impact broadly across the organization is expected. Qualifications:
- A PhD in Chemical/BioChemical Engineering with at least 4 years of relevant experience.
Required: (Relevant work experience should include)
- Experience with chemical engineering-related technology development
- Established subject matter expertise in the following topical areas:
- Process Modeling and Simulation, including model discrimination approaches
- Reaction engineering, including kinetic studies
- Flow chemistry,
- Model Based Experimental design
- Experience with process scale-up and technology transfer, moving from laboratory to pilot plant and production scale.
- Demonstrated proficiency in balancing resource requirements within projects and across multiple assigned projects.
