General Description:

Under general supervision, provides nursing care in a hospital to a variety of patients with health problems ranging from simple to complex.

6 Step Down beds prepared with bedside cardiac monitoring. In step down level of care more critical and advanced nursing interventions are provided and may include treatment such as

• Hemodynamic monitoring
• Arterial Lines
• Insulin Drips
• Administration and care of patients receiving intra-peritoneal chemotherapy
• Administration and care of patients receiving high dose Interleukin 2

8 Medical Oncology beds with a patient population consisting of those diagnosed with disease processes classified as solid tumor cancers. Patient's acuities are often high because of the potential for multi system complications related to chemotherapy and/or disease processes. Nursing interventions and treatments may include:

• Chemotherapy and Biotherapy administration and monitoring
• Blood product administration
• Palliative care
• Management of oncologic emergencies (TLS, DIC, Neutropenic Fever, Cardiac Tamponade)
• Management Central Venous Catheter including ports

Essential Function/Duties:

Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients. Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments; notes all changes in physician order on assigned patients. Assists physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatment. Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients, observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary. Administers medication as prescribed. Initiates, regulates and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products. Delivers patient care competently. Interacts with family and patient in sharing care plan while in the hospital and at time of discharge. Informs patient and family of hospital procedures. Makes referral regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel. Delegates tasks to support staff.
Minimum Qualifications:

*Education: Graduation from an approved school of nursing.

*Licensure: Possession of a valid temporary license or permanent license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education as a Registered Nurse prior to entrance on duty. Permanent license must be obtained within 3 months of appointment.

*Minimum one (1) year acute care preferred

Physical Requirements (with or without accommodations):

Requires frequent bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and sufficient manual dexterity to operate therapeutic equipment. Must be able to stand and/or to walk for long periods at a time. May be required to perform repetitive tasks and motions. Requires sufficient visual acuity to read charts and equipment displays. Requires ability to hear alarms, telephones and normal speaking voice. Good mental and physical health to work for long periods of time in a highly stressful atmosphere is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques and procedures. Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques. Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors. Some computer skills.
