Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesDay to day responsibilities would be observing appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations and study protocols. Observing appropriate safety and health practices including personal protective equipment and barrier requirements. Performing daily health/mortality checks to distinguish unhealthy animals from healthy animals as well as basic technical procedures such as SC, IV, IM and IP injections, orbital sinus blood collection, cardiac puncture and oral gavage. This individual will also perform blood collection procedures, basic tissue collection procedures, gross necropsy procedures and euthanasia. The Research Animal Technician I/II will also observe and examine animals for sign of disease, distress or pain. Other responsibilities include recording observations and body weights according to GLPs. On an as needed basis, this role will operate equipment used for sanitizing and sterilizing animal caging equipment and materials, operate and adjust animal watering system as well as clean cages, racks, feeders, water bottles and pans. Receive, quarantine and remove animals as required as well as perform animal identification procedures as well as change cages and racks as needed. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the animal facility in a clean and orderly condition, recognizing and identifying opportunities to improve operations, and practice performing additional technical procedures when time allows. This individual will need to interact effectively with other animal support staff and investigative staff as well as perform other duties as assigned by the LAR Manager.
Research Animal Technician I: HS diploma plus least 3 years of experience working in a laboratory animal research setting, or AA degree in biological sciences plus 1 year of experience, or BA/BS degree plus 0-1 year of experience.
Research Animal Technician II: HS diploma plus least 4 years of experience working in a laboratory animal research setting, or AA degree in biological sciences plus 2 years of experience, or BA/BS degree plus 1 year of experience.
Individual will be to have knowledge of hazardous and infectious material handling as well as knowledge and use of protective equipment and safety procedures related to the possible exposure to radioactive material, dusts, viruses, tissues, chemicals, fumes, vapors, and mists that could potentially affect the health of the employee.
This role will require someone with the following abilities: lift objects frequently in performing daily work activities, pull or push objects on a regular basis, carry objects on a regular basis in the arms or on the shoulders, grasp objects utilizing the fingers (fine motor manipulation), reach for objects above the head or below the waist, stoop of crouch by bending at the waist or by bending the legs, as well as withstand exposure to high temperature levels that may results in some body discomfort.
Desirable RequirementsALAT certification is preferred.
Knowledge of USDA, OLAW and AAALAC requirements as well as GLPs is preferred.
Oncology experience would be preferred, but not required.
Hands-on experience with PET Scanners and Imaging equipment would be a plus.
