The nurse is an integral part of the imaging /radiology team. The major goal of the radiology nurse is to provide quality nursing care to inpatients and out patients in the Medical Imaging Department. The radiology nurse cares for patients across the lifespan. The radiology nurse is qualified and prepared to handle all unexpected emergencies that occur during any imaging/interventional procedures. Areas where the nurse may function are as follows: general diagnostic, interventional/ therapeutic procedures, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, breast imaging. The overall goal of the radiology nurse is to provide the highest quality nursing care. Under the general supervision of a physician and/or a radiologist, the incumbent is responsible for assessing the nursing needs and initiating appropriate intervention for patients in the medical imaging department, according to nursing and medical imaging department philosophy, goals, policies and procedures. Proper nursing standards are to be practiced as well as assist in the education program for staffing needs. Job may include direct supervision of students at the discretion of the area supervisor. Employee must have the same licensure or have completed the same training to satisfy the requirements of the discipline of the student. Direct supervision means the primary caregiver is readily available to the student throughout the shift.

B. Education: Graduate of a NLN accredited school of nursing.
C. Experience: Have at least several years experience. Critical Care experience is preferred. Performs in accordance with delineated job responsibilities and satisfactorily completes a yearly evaluation based on these responsibilities. Must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively meet the needs of the patient/internal and external customer.
D. Special qualifications: Has a general knowledge of all areas of nursing practice. Demonstrates mature judgment, initiative, and proficiency in critical thinking skills. Act as a liaison between radiology, nursing units and ambulatory services. Adapts to fluctuating team priorities, maintains positive working relationships, and demonstrates flexibility. Acts as a resource person for radiologists, radiological technologists, and others concerning drugs for pain control, drug interactions and side effects, anticoagulants and those medications that require special teaching. Coordinates effective handling of patient care emergencies; such as contrast media reactions and cardiac arrests. Provides continuity if care for the critically ill patient. Monitors the safety of patients with specialty equipment (e.g., arterial lines, hyper alimentation, intravenous fluids, drainage tubes, oxygen, and hemodynamic monitoring. Demonstrates ability to prioritize nursing responsibilities within the department.
