We are looking for an enthusiastic energetic individual to work closely with the scientific teams to design, implement and apply informatics and modeling solutions that address Research & Non-Clinical Development (RNCD) needs while fitting within the overall R&D informatics architecture.
He/she will provide scientific, technological and process knowledge/experience to advise on appropriate options to expand scientific capabilities. He/she will collaborate with scientists, engineers and architects to ensure that new technologies fit within the overall R&D It strategy. The Scientific Solutions Architect will work closely with R&D scientists and oversee software engineers and vendors when needed to implement a project.
The Solutions Architect will stay up to date with leading edge scientific and technological developments and help to establish the technology strategy for the RNCD function, ensuring alignment of technology roadmaps to business strategies. Working with the head of Scientific Computing & Informatics he/she will continually evaluate the portfolio of technologies and applications within R&D and collaborate with service managers to meet business needs. The Solutions Architect will drive innovation initiatives to deliver new capability required by RNCD as well as bringing fresh creative ideas and thinking to future improvements and opportunities that will benefit the scientific community.
Working closely with RNCD team members the Scientific Solutions Architect will also train scientists in the use of computational tools and personally use those tools to advance scientific projects by performing informatics-based analysis (cheminformatics/bioinformatics) , computational biology and/or computational chemistry (molecular modeling) and building predictive models (predictive analytics).
30% of Time : Design and Evolve Leading Edge RNCD Technologies
-Proactively identify opportunities to use informatics techniques, bring in new capabilities or further develop existing technologies to improve the quality or efficiency of RNCD
-Provide technical leadership in the selection, design and configuration of applications, mapping scientists needs to functional and technical requirements
-Possess and maintain broad technical, scientific and business knowledge across a wide range of discovery technologies
-Ensure RNCD application architecture is consistent and compatible with other infrastructure and application components and are compliant with Shire corporate standards
-Lead implementation projects and manage vendors, developers and software engineers to implement new algorithms and technologies
40% of Time: Develop Partnership, Team Work and Innovation
-Deeply integrate with scientific teams and routinely be included in all RNCD technology activities as well as individual scientific projects
-Proactively train scientists in the use of computational tools and techniques and champion their use
-Join scientific project teams and perform informatics-based analysis (including bioinformatics & sequencing based work), computational chemistry/biology, molecular modeling
-Identify need and build predictive models to support both individual scientific projects and to address larger scientific problems such as antibody developability
-Regularly collaborate with other Solution Architects to share ideas, common practices and thought leadership in order to simplify technology landscape and improve the effectiveness of IT on R&D
-Partner with the scientific groups to identify new impactful opportunities for innovation and efficiencies in R&D and support/champion the development of ideas coming from RNCD
20% of Time: Define Scientific Informatics Systems Standards and Strategy
-Work with the RNCD BP to define RNCD informatics strategy and create application/integration blueprint and standards for R&D systems
-Identify construction sourcing options and preferred scientific software vendors as part of the project planning process
-Participate in relevant road mapping and business case development activities to provide input on new projects (e.g. new capabilities, lifecycle refresh and enhancements)
10% of Time: Manage & Update Scientific Computing Systems
-Manage and maintain the system roadmap, provide input and awareness of future upgrade plans and projects.
-With RNCD Service Manager establish strong working relationship with all required vendors to ensure upgrade paths, system dependencies and retirement plans are understood and accommodated for.
-Provide external focus on competitors, industry trends and direction to identify opportunities to deliver new scientific & business capabilities
Education and Experience requirements
Bachelor's degree- scientific discipline, informatics or other related field. Advanced degree in scientific informatics discipline such as cheminformatics, bioinformatics, computational chemistry or computational biology (or equivalent work experience) strongly preferred.
Pharmaceutical experience in the research, discovery or non-clinical development areas. At least two years of scientific, informatics or modeling experiencewith exposure to algorithm & application development.
