Looking for a company that inspires passion, courage and imagination, where you can be part of the team shaping the future of global commerce? Want to shape how millions of people buy, sell, connect, and share around the world? If you’re interested in joining a purpose driven community that is dedicated to creating an ambitious and inclusive workplace, join eBay – a company you can be proud to be a part of.
Join the Search Science team at eBay! Do you have what it takes to improve a world-class real-time search engine that serves millions of queries a day? Do you thrive on developing data mining techniques to pull insight out of large data sets. We are passionate about building the best search platform for the world’s largest online marketplace and are looking for top-notch software Engineering and Data Science leaders.
The eBay marketplace allows users to search through a repository of a billion items, and unlike a traditional search engine, 20% of these expire (are sold) each day. This creates a unique and interesting set of challenges in the areas of data mining, machine learning and engineering that you won’t find anywhere else.
Be directly responsible for improving search at eBay via services such as spell corrections, result set ranking, related searches, synonym/acronym expansions, and query rewrites.
Conceptualize, code, deploy, and iterate on designs from prototypes all the way through to production systems.
Analyze petabytes of real-world performance data to understand patterns and trends.
Transform data insights into actionable reports, targeting algorithms, and model features.
Provide technical expertise in statistical analysis, data mining, machine learning, NLP, and Information Retrieval.
Work jointly with architects, engineers, QE, and operations to deliver complex applications.
You will be the technical lead (non-management) for a team of software engineers and data scientists.
Well versed in areas such as applied statistics, machine learning, data mining and general algorithms.
A hacker. If something you need doesn’t exist you don’t wait around, you go and build it.
Proficient with data stores like SQL and Hadoop.
Inherently curious. You want to know whether the distribution of the query frequency on ebay.com is Zipfian and what family of random graphs models the relationship between sellers and buyers on eBay.
A polyglot programmer. You probably have a favorite language like Scala or R but you can jump in and write some Java or C as needed.
Intermediate level understanding of common data structures and algorithms (think 200 level course in computer science).
Intermediate to advanced level understanding of applied statistics and/or machine learning (think a 400 level undergraduate course or a first year graduate course).
Basic knowledge of distributed systems. We don’t expect that you have a massive Hadoop cluster at your disposal but we do expect that you’re aware of distributed systems paradigms either through coursework and reading or you have tried out some current technologies yourself.
BS in Computer Science or related field, MS/PHD desired
10+ years software experience
Information Retrieval (search/recommendation/classification) experience or Machine Learning experience.
