This attorney position supports Nationwide Financial' s Retirement Plans Business, specifically new business acquisition, RFPs, plan set up and agreement work, product and other business development initiatives. This includes providing legal advice and support regarding certain governmental 457(b) and 401(a) plan design questions, plan operations issues, transparency initiatives, and legislative and regulatory changes and their application to business products and services.

JOB SUMMARY: Provides full legal service to one or more assigned areas. Works on basic cases and/or projects without supervision. Works on more complex cases and/or projects with minimal supervision. Supports assistant general counsel or lead counsel with legal questions or issues. Focuses on client relationships and legal matters. Exercises judgment in matters which have potential for a significant impact on the company.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Managing Counsel / Lead Counsel

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Works on legal matters that are moderately important, risky or complicated.

2. Researches legal precedents, defines legal and factual issues, drafts necessary legal documents and develops conclusions and recommendations.

3. Usually deals with non-management associates and lower to middle management of the Department or the Company on legal matters within his or her area of legal expertise. Has virtually no input into Company decision-making.

4. Requires moderate supervision and/or coaching from manager on legal work or client interaction. Has little interaction with persons outside of the Company.

5. Typically receives matters from a Lead Counsel, Managing Counsel or non-management associates and lower to middle management of the Company.

6. Keeps informed of new legislative and case law activity in area of expertise and informs manager.

7. May train or mentor less experienced attorneys or paralegals on procedural or legal issues.

8. Occasionally leads teams on tasks, projects or assignments.

9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: JD degree from an accredited law school.

Designations: Currently licensed as an attorney in an appropriate U.S. jurisdiction.

Experience: Typically has four or more years of relevant legal experience.

Knowledge: Has a moderate amount of experience in an area of legal expertise. Knowledge of legal practices and procedures. Project management concepts and techniques.

Skills/ Competencies: Oral and written communication skills for contacts with all levels of management and clients. Analytical ability to interpret statutes, regulations, insurance policies and other contracts. Has limited decision-making ability. Ability to organize and coordinate projects and cases. Negotiation skills.

Staffing Exceptions: Staffing exceptions to the above minimum job requirements must be approved by the: Legal Executive and Human Resources.
