The mission of the Industrial Design & Human Factors (IDHF) group is to create compelling user experiences that are intuitive, holistic and branded. Using human-centered innovation, Design Thinking methodologies, and brand-driven design strategies we aim to create a portfolio of surgical tools that are as sophisticated and precise as the procedures they perform.
 
 
The Senior Industrial Designer will be diverse in their thinking, capabilities and experiences embodying the following attributes necessary for success:
 
Human Factors/ Usability Champion. Use human-centered design methodologies to identify what makes the product intuitive-to-use. Gain insights from observing highly skilled ‘Key Opinion Leaders’ as well as complete novices as they interact with existing products, sketch models, and prototypes. Identify and eliminate potential use errors early in the development process.
 
Research-driven Innovator. Provide creative design leadership that uncovers new product opportunities. Work face-to-face with our customers, gather, synthesize and convert user research into purposefully innovative concepts that differentiate DePuy Synthes in the market.
 
Classic Industrial Designer. Possess a strong mechanical aptitude with an innate interest in materials and process. Use traditional sketching and CAD tools to create concepts that meet cost targets, project schedule, manufacturing processes and hospital procedures. Collaborate to evolve established visual brand language and contribute to future design strategies.
 
Brand Ambassador. Collaborate across the DePuy Synthes Franchise and J&J to help build a compelling and unique brand presence in our market. Apply your creativity to help create a brand that fuses great product design with customer aspirations.
 
Strategic Design Planner. Optimize IDHF's ability to execute great design within a complex environment. You must possess broad project management skills and the ability to seamlessly switch between big picture thinking and product-level details.

Qualifications
  • To be considered for the role a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design or equivalent required. 
  • At least four years of experience applying user-centered design principles and branding throughout the product development process is required.
  • Creative capacity to conceptualize designs, develop and identify alternative solutions to problems must be demonstrated, along with the ability to communicate using 2D visualization, 3D CAD modeling and presentation skills.
  • Proficient time management, project planning and tracking skills are critical. 
  • Experience identifying user needs and requirements through user research, observing people using products is preferred for this role.
  • Experience with the regulated industry is required. especially an understanding of medical device usability standards, is preferred.
