The Senior Manager, External Innovation Strategic Marketing \ will be responsible for developing strategic business case assessments and R&D collaboration plans with GFO and R&D partners for a portfolio of investments (worth ~$20-80MM per franchise) in entrepreneur start-up companies with strong emerging science in an area of strategic growth interest across multiple Consumer Franchises.  Investment types include both minority equity investments with J&J Development Corporation and option deal investments with Business Development and J&J Innovation Centers.  Critical responsibility of this role is to gain trust & leadership of external entrepreneur CEOs as well as internal J&J junior to senior level cross-functional partner to influence the development of strong collaborations; ultimately resulting in strong asset acquisitions to grow our consumer franchises ~20% in next 3-5 years, leapfrogging current internal development projects.  In addition, this role will also partner with strategic leads post investment to determine if key proof points have been demonstrated to determine J&J’s future interest in officially acquiring or licensing start-up assets into J&J, worth a minimum of $100-500MM.


The Senior Manager, External Innovation Strategic Marketing will:

  • Lead cross-functional teams comfortably into new strategic directions based on sound data and business rationale.
  • Have experience in driving results in senior leadership meetings and presentations.
  • Gather, extrapolate, analyze and validate data from variety of different sources to develop business case scenarios in often currently undefined white space markets.
  • Create with GFO and Finance partners robust financial models that are risk adjusted, adaptable and easy to understand; developing a level of accuracy and consistency across projects and need states that facilitates strong overall portfolio assessments.
  • Work with R&D & GFO partners to develop clear clinical and business proof points to demonstrate future potential of investment asset.

  • A BA/BS in business is required.  
  • MBA preferred, with a concentration in Marketing or Finance strongly preferred.
  • At minimum of 5 years of consumer marketing and/or a combination of Consumer Marketing and Commercial Business Experience required.
  • Experience in leading both in-market product and new product innovation white space including: comprehensive business case analysis, market sizing, forecasting, and new product valuation models is required. 
  • Experience in cross-functional collaboration in business development deals, and due diligence preferred.
  • Extensive project management experience is required.
  • Preferably experience in both start-up organizations and large corporate environments.
  • Experience in creating and running different types of consumer business models preferred.
  • Up to 20% domestic & potentially global travel to work with entrepreneur investment partners required.
