The Senior Materials Engineer III will play a key role in developing and implementing raw materials related projects at the Raynham, MA manufacturing facility as part of the global Materials Development Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading break-through materials technology related projects with particular focus on the development and validation of novel metal forming processes (e.g. powder metallurgy / Metal Injection Molding / additive manufacturing processes) that deliver outstanding value in the areas of Quality, Service and Cost.  This candidate will need to collaborate closely with global functions (Suppliers, Technology Virtual Team’s, SME’s, Source, Procurement, R&D, Engineering and Operations) in order to be successful identifying and delivering significant materials related engineering projects.  Assignment length for the Senior Materials Engineer, expected to last approximately 24 months.

In addition to leading the implementation of specific projects, the role will be key in developing materials strategies that support the wider business and in using meaningful data to win support across key stakeholders.  


  • Develop a high level and understanding of Raynham’s orthopaedic product portfolio and manufacturing processes
  • Full Project Leadership responsibility for process design, development and validation projects
  • Apply Engineering, Materials and Process knowledge to the design, development & validation of innovative metal-forming technologies that are scalable across the global DePuy Synthes manufacturing network
  • Support the development of capital business cases for new process development projects
  • Foster collaborative relationships with Source, Procurement, Research & Development, Engineering and Operations to facilitate development and validation of manufacturing processes
  • Engage with key technology partners to develop processes that best support the delivery of business objectives
  • Conduct feasibility studies to assess new technologies or process improvements
  • Implement design for manufacturability in new processes to minimize lifecycle cost
  • Manage key project stakeholders throughout the business through effective and timely communications of meaningful data
  • Develop medium- to long-term strategy for materials-related technologies
  • Development of business cases and resourcing plans for new process-development projects
  • Ensure all activities comply with GMP, ISO and quality system requirements
  • Ensure that all health, safety and environmental requirements are fulfilled
  • Participate in collaborations with R&D and academic institutions

  • A minimum of a B.S. in Material Science or Engineering or required
  • Must have at least three (3) years of overall engineering experience within a Medical Device or other regulated work environment is required.
  • Project management experience leading complex projects involving equipment specification / selection / procurement, installation & validation is required.
  • Process and/or product development and validation experience is required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office required
  • Must have strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills is required.
  • Ph.D. in Material Sciences or Engineering is preferred.

  • History of identifying and delivering significant cost reduction projects is preferred.

  • Process Excellence/Six Sigma (Green or Black Belt) Certification is preferred

  • Statistical and problem solving engineering expertise (Six Sigma, SE or A3) is preferred.

  • Proficient in interpreting and optimizing GD&T systems as applied to design specifications is preferred.

  • People leadership experience is preferred.

  • Casting, Forging or CNC machining process or material testing experience preferred

  • Demonstrable experience / knowledge of metals and associated processing & testing technologies - especially in the areas of molding, sintering and metallurgy is preferred.

  • Experience with Metal Injection Molding (MIM), powder metallurgy, 3D printing or any other additive manufacturing processes would be a distinct advantage is preferred.

  • Experience with the integration of R&D Programs into manufacturing operations is preferred.

  • Extensive project management experience, in particular projects involving validation of processes/products is preferred.

  • This position is located in Raynham, Massachusetts and requires the candidate to possess the ability to travel up to 25% is required.
