Lead the design, development, modification, and evaluation of mechanical hardware components and systems for products including, but not limited to, head up displays.  Responsible for mechanical design of plastics, stampings and castings including knowledge of part fabrication processes. 
  • Collaborate with systems, electronics, optical, and software engineering to achieve required technical feasibility of designs.
  • Interface with Panasonic engineers locally and globally to ensure robust mechanical designs.
  • Support DV, PV, production development and launch of mechanical systems and components.
  • Provide assistance and technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Interpret and comply with company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Adhere to Panasonic automotive product development and program management processes to ensure successful milestone reviews, design completion deadlines, and cost objectives.
  • Use computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks.
  • Conduct simulation and testing to ensure the integrity of the designs at multiple stages in the development cycle.
  • Prepare information as needed in the design documentation process.
  • Participate in development of design process procedures.
  • Some interface with international partners including, but not limited to, teams located in Japan, China, and Germany.
  • Some OEM customer interface to participate in design reviews to ensure objectives are met and to identify and resolve implementation issues.
  • Lead or support mechanical system/component design in support of Panasonic head up display platforms applying global strategies to accommodate North American market and other opportunities.
  • Ensure mechanical designs meet all internal and customer requirements.
  • May assist with developing, participating in and analyzing research to determine feasibility of proposed product specifications.
  • Prepare mechanical drawings, product and system related specifications, and Bills of Material (BOM).  Accuracy of BOM must be confirmed.
  • Direct and coordinate manufacture or building of prototype products and systems. Determine component requirements and availability appropriate to product phase.
  • Plan, develop, and participate in experimentation and tests related to product development to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Generate and analyze test data and reports.
  • Lead problem solving and issue resolution during development, DV, PV, and production phases.
  • Identify potential build or manufacturing feasibility issues and engage appropriate members of the team to ensure resolution.
  • May employ quality improvement and supplier relations approach utilizing customer required formats such as Production Parts Approval Process (PPAP) and Advanced Production Quality Process (APQP) techniques.
  • Initiate, recommend, or provide solutions through designated channels.
  • May develop test and design process procedures evaluating test results for possible application to other products and/or systems.
  • Gain knowledge of budget requirements related to product development.
  • Manage product design, tasks, equipment, and tools within budget constraints of given projects.
  • Support project leaders in monthly budget forecasting updates.
  • Support external companies and resources that may be contracted to provide design and/or fabrication services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Prepare reports, charts, graphs, and other statistical information.
  • Maintain awareness of current industry innovations in both product and automotive design.

  • Four-year College Degree in at least one STEM major (Science; Technology; Engineering; Math), specifically including some coursework in optical design and ray-tracing analysis (either under-grad or post-grad) and a minimum of five (5) years mechanical design experience in electrical and/or optical products applying plastic injection molding and/or metal molding concepts; or a minimum of  ten (10) years mechanical design experience in electrical and/or optical products applying plastic injection molding and/or metal molding concepts.
  • Three years' experience in an electronics-manufacturing environment required.
  • Prior experience using Zemax software and proficiency in using standard optical measurement equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Windows-based databases as appropriate to the position and assignment.
  • Simulation tools (Icepack, Light Tools, Ansys, etc) experience preferred.
  • Experience in automotive electronics packaging preferred.
  • Design experience in plastics, stampings and castings including knowledge of part fabrication process required.
  • NX experience required.
  • Thermal Management experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge in the following areas: FEA (Finite Element Analysis), Kinematics, Simulation, Lighting/Illumination, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance), DVP&, R (Design Verification Plan and Report), 8D (Eight Discipline Problem Solving Model), BOM creation (Build of Material), DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), Design Review, ISIR Evaluation (Initial Sample Inspection Report), CATIA, UG, Solid Works, Benchmarking, Prototypes, Validation, Patent Origination.
