The Protein Science group in Molecular Discovery Technologies provides protein production, analytical, and biophysical characterization of protein targets, protein reagents, as well as therapeutic and reagent antibodies. This group supports programs across all BMS therapeutic areas including Immuno-oncology (IO), Oncology, Immunoscience, and Fibrosis, and all modalities including biologics, small molecules and cycle peptides.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the Protein Analytical function within the Discovery Protein Science group, supporting a wide range of protein therapeutic programs. This includes antibodies, Adnectins, bi-specifics, protein-drug conjugates, and other protein therapeutics and imaging agents. The candidate will also play a key role in biologics drug candidate developability and manufacturability assessment.

- Serve as a lead scientist, team leader, and individual contributor in our protein analytical workflows (reagents & therapeutics), with a focus on analytical chromatography (SE-HPLC, MALS, IEX, HIC), DSC, spectrophotometric techniques & iCIEF.
- Design, implement, optimize and troubleshoot analytical techniques for the characterization of protein therapeutics, primarily antibodies, from discovery to development.
- Use mass spectrometry to confirm protein candidate ID and characterize variants.
- Incorporate existing analytical tools and keep abreast of literature and industry trends to ensure we maintain a cutting-edge approach to the field.
- Supervise 1-2 research scientist(s) engaged in protein characterization, data analysis, and communication.
- Serve as key liaison with partner groups (purification, analytical, biology) and downstream (process development) groups to coordinate and communicate developability, formulation / stability, and manufacturability assessments. Actively participate in cross-functional teams and Communities-of-Practice.
- Provide protein chemistry leadership to project teams and drug discovery working groups across multiple therapeutic areas. Analyze data and present results and recommendations to partners across Discovery and early development.
- Participate in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols, and regulatory documents, where necessary.

Qualifications:
- PhD in a Biology or related field. Successful candidates should have 4 years of post-doctoral experience, preferably including experience in a Biotech, Pharma or Biopharma setting. Experience in protein biochemistry, protein chromatographic and biophysical characterization, and/or analytical / formulation development.
- Proven experience in characterization of proteins using analytical HPLC (size-exclusion, ion exchange, reverse-phase), MALS, and iCIEF.
- Experience with biophysical characterization of protein oligomeric structure and stability using microcalorimetry, fluorescence or other spectroscopy, light scattering or other related technologies.
- Mass spectrometry experience, including intact analysis & peptide mapping.
- Excellent communication skills, evidence of innovative thinking, and ability/potential to function at a high level in a matrixed environment
- Experience with electronic laboratory notebook is a plus.
- Experience with LIMS highly desirable.
- Supervisory experience highly desirable.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with a sense of urgency and ability to work under tight deadlines.
