The Innovation Engineering group within Monsanto's Global Supply Chain Production Technology organization is responsible for developing strategic, innovative and cutting edge technologies and processes that can produce step-change efficiencies in the Supply Chain production processes.  We are seeking an outstanding Scientist or Engineer to join our group as a Senior Research Scientist with a focus on bringing innovations into field, plant and laboratory processes of our Supply Chain business in an effort to improve costs, capacity, reliability and seed quality. This position reports to the Research Applications Lead, Innovation Engineering Group.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Lead and coordinate Seed or Seedling phenotyping research initiatives
  • Identify and drive the development of novel analytical approaches to predict product quality and accelerate product release to market
  • Support advancement and deployment of current Innovation Engineering and Global Production Technology initiatives including Seed Process of the Future, Advanced Seed Production and other high-value projects
  • Understand current Supply Chain production and processing challenges, and develop practical and valuable solutions that will ultimately be implemented in production facilities 
  • Oversee day-to-day R&D work; assure high quality of experiments, methods and data
  • Develop project proposals, including cost estimates and financial justifications
  • Communicate research progress and challenges to stakeholders

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Ph.D. and 5+ years experience in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering or related discipline, OR a Master's degree in the same disciplines and 8+ years of applicable experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative analytical approaches
  • Knowledgeable in several areas including: crop physiology, seed/seedling phenotyping & modeling, and/or corn/soybean production experience
  • Competency with laboratory prototyping and validation methods, including construction of test stands, design of experiments for performance testing and data analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of scientists and engineers
  • Strong communication skills to all levels of internal and external leadership and scientists/engineers with diverse backgrounds
  • A strong desire and ability to learn underlying newer science and engineering principles and objectives to enable maximum benefit and identify new opportunities for enabling technologies
  • A proven record of delivering business results on aggressive timetables with innovative thinking and teamwork skills
  • Motivated to work in the challenging, fast-paced, and continually changing environment to enable technological innovations for unique applications in the Supply Chain production environment

Desired Skills/Experience:
  • Knowledge in Corn and Soybean Production Practices
  • Hands on experience with NIR spectroscopy
  • Working knowledge of Applied Statistics and/or Modeling
