Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure and Operations (MCIO) is the engine that powers Microsoft’s cloud services. The team is responsible for designing, building and operating our unified global datacenters; managing the demand planning and capacity utilization of our unified infrastructure; and all of the operations needed to run the physical infrastructure (including supply chain, hardware, power, security, and workflow teams). We focus on smart growth with an emphasis on automation, data driven engineering, cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability. We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform. Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 160 datacenters and 2 million servers. Our portfolio is built and managed by a team of subject matter experts working 24x7x365 to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide.
We are looking for a Sr. Manager, Safety and Health who will be MCIO’s strategic and tactical lead responsible for the development and centralized deployment of multiple occupational safety and health processes across one of the industry’s largest and most globally distributed datacenter portfolios. This encompasses safety and health policies, standards and processes associated with the Design, Construction, Deployment, Operation and Decommissioning of Datacenters, and may include processes for:
Safety Leadership, Accountability, Culture and Behaviors
Contractor, Supplier & Vendor Safety Management
Risk Assessment, Mitigation and Control
Management of Change
Safety Communication, Training & Awareness
Safety Process & Performance Measurement
Safety in Design & Innovation
High Risk Activity (HRA) Management, including but not limited to:
o Electrical Work
o Energy Isolation
o Working from Height
o Lifting Operations
o Mobile Equipment
o Material Handling
o Hazardous Materials
o Confined Spaces
o Driving o Ground Disturbance

This is a highly influential position reporting to the Sr. Director, Environment Health & Safety. The Sr. Manager, Safety must be an experienced and recognized strategic and technical expert in safety and health, with strong skills in working with business partners inside and outside the EHS team, to develop and deploy effective safety solutions. His/her mission is the design and implementation of programs geared toward the prevention of serious incidents, injuries and property loss across construction and operation of the global network of datacenters. This will be achieved through development, implementation and execution of robust, formal, standardized Safety Management Systems and processes. S/he will monitor risks, trends and leading/lagging metrics, then develop reports and management review content that will be used to drive accountability and action. There will be extensive interaction with a diverse range of business partners, peers and stakeholders. The global span and complexity of our activities requires advanced knowledge and technical specialization in safety management to recognize and control risks.
The Sr. Manager, Safety will:
Work with leaders, staff and contractors at all levels and in multiple cultures to implement effective solutions.
Drive a standardized and harmonized approach across datacenters (construction and operation) to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
Present on a regular basis to various leadership teams.
Interface with local, national and international regulatory agencies on safety issues.
Interpret global safety standards and regulatory requirements to assure compliance and aggressive management of risk.
Establish risk mitigation goals and develops metrics, dashboards and/or scorecards to track/communicate/drive progress.
Analyze leading & lagging safety metrics and communicate results to leadership to drive action and accountability.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, & QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: A University/Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of degree in science, engineering or related Safety/SHE discipline/degree is required.
Experience: A minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in Safety is required, with demonstrated knowledge and experience controlling the broad spectrum of safety risks.
The successful candidate will have a strong record of accomplishment preventing injuries, developing/implementing robust processes and management systems, and in building productive collaborative relationships with internal/external business partners. Experience controlling Safety risks in large-scale datacenters is beneficial but not required. The successful candidate will be a strong communicator & influencer who is credible, self-assured and highly capable of negotiating successful outcomes with key business leaders, while at the same time being flexible to different approaches and changing business priorities. S/he will have strong technical skills and the ability to describe and write complex issues/requirements in a clear and concise manner. S/he will apply previous learning and ideas to new situations, projects and teams, developing creative solutions to manage risk. S/he will demonstrate strong business acumen that includes experience working with business partners at various levels and functions. Excellent communication and project management skills are required, including the ability to lead teams, produce and maintain timelines, manage multiple commitments and assemble project information into clear, concise written reports.
