The Gene Therapy Translational Science group is part of Pfizer's Rare Disease Research Unit (RDRU) focused on gene therapy specific platform technologies towards the delivery of IND-approved vectors for testing in clinical trials. This Senior Scientist will be part of an interdisciplinary team partnering closely with the RDRU Biology and Gene Therapy groups as well as colleagues in other Pfizer disciplines contributing to translational preclinical packages related to novel gene therapies. This laboratory-based Senior Scientist will be part of an interdisciplinary team and contribute to preclinical data required to advance Pfizer's gene therapy-based portfolio. This particular role will have a strong focus on gene therapy delivery related to rare cardiac and neuromuscular diseases, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other muscular dystrophies, spinal muscular atrophy and Friedreich's ataxia, and other diseases. This Senior Scientist will have advanced expertise in at least one of the following areas (biology of skeletal muscle, biology of cardiac muscle, neuromuscular junctions, monogenic disorders affecting muscle or neuromuscular junctions) and working knowledge of the remaining areas. The Senior Scientist will work independently, use scientific judgment in making decisions within the area of expertise, proactively gather inputs from colleagues, develop novel processes, and will be expected to provide significant scientific expertise to the team. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES Perform in vivo experiments related to delivering of AAV gene therapy vectors into muscle tissue. Work will include optimizing AAV-based therapy formulations, routes of administration and understanding in vivo tissue distribution/cellular tropism Execute preclinical AAV delivery studies evaluating vector safety and efficacy. Conduct tissue biodistribution studies, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and other experiments. Partner with other RDRU and WRD teams, especially pharmacokinetics and drug disposition and drug safety to develop translational preclinical packages for gene therapy clinical candidates. Deliver high-value data and lead in vivo aspects of AAV-based gene therapy projects in the RDRU pipeline. Work with external collaborations and Contract Research Organizations (CROs). BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D in the life sciences with 0-3 years of post-doctoral experience or Master's Degree with 3-6 years of academic or industry research experience Scientific training and background in muscle physiology and neuromuscular disease. Experience with AAV in vivo delivery and evaluation of construct pharmacology in muscle cell types is required. Hands on experience performing and analyzing in vivo biology assays related to muscle physiology and biochemistry is required. Exceptional communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team. Evidence of scientific accomplishments in the form of publications and presentations.
