Senior Software Engineer

The Windows team is looking for a server performance analyst. The person should be an experienced C developer with a passion for understanding and solving customer performance issues in operating systems. Windows needs to meet the performance demands of Azure, Microsoft’s cloud services, and server application developers. The role provides the opportunity to make an impact in these high-growth areas that are critical for Microsoft.

The person will measure and analyze the performance of Windows, identify opportunities to change OS code and improve performance, design and code OS performance improvements, and deliver written and verbal reports to educate others and drive positive changes in Windows. Team members work to optimize performance for key Windows features, and work with customers of Windows including Azure to solve performance issues. The team also develops tools and education to help Microsoft engineers do a great job with their code’s performance. Cross-team collaboration is integral to how the team operates. As a team member, you’ll learn tools used to analyze Windows performance, including Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA) and Event Tracing for Windows (ETW).

You’ll work closely with partner teams across Microsoft, to deeply understand performance issues and the software stacks involved, and to reach agreement on how to measure, analyze, and improve performance. Based on your test or live measurements and trace analysis, you’ll identify opportunities for code and configuration improvement.

You may develop prototypes or support feature teams making code changes and will help validate proposals and final solutions have an impact. You’ll write and present analysis reports summarizing how performance is important to a customer, how configuration and code impact performance based on detailed trace analysis, and what changes are being made to improve performance. In the end, you’ll have been the driver and key contributor for a cross-team engagement that resulted in impactful performance improvements for customers. Areas of performance work include Windows Server and Hyper-V Containers, Azure (host and VM boot, servicing, Hyper-V runtime), Microsoft Azure Stack (Storage Spaces Direct, Software Defined Networking), and Microsoft services including Bing and Office 365.

Basic Qualifications:
• 3+ years of C development experience

Preferred Qualifications:
• Passion for understanding cross-team perspectives and driving consensus
• Eagerness to learn and teach new skills
• Degree in computer science or a related technical discipline
• Experience with Windows performance analysis tools and methods
• Deep technical knowledge of Hyper-V, Containers, Windows kernel, file systems, networking, IIS, SQL, SMB Deep understanding of hardware internals including processor instructions, hardware counters, cache and interrupt behavior
• Experience with Windows kernel or driver development
• Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills
• Demonstrated cross-team collaboration skills
• Strong understanding of Windows internals
