The Azure Big Data U-SQL Compiler / Language team is looking for an experienced Senior/Principle engineer to design and architect Microsoft’s next programming language and analytical technologies. Our team’s charter is to design and operate Microsoft’s massively scalable analytic platform; internally this is referred to as SCOPE / Cosmos, externally our offering is branded as U-SQL / ADLA (Azure Data Lake Analytics). This platform is both the strategic bet of the company and the internal backbone of Microsoft today; executing over a million jobs daily (batch, interactive, streaming), processing petabytes of data. The larger ADLA (Azure Data Lake Analytics) team is responsible for (4) significant areas; language and compilation, query optimization, runtime execution and distributed job scheduling across hundreds of thousands of machines, all of which span (3) distinct workloads; batch, interactive and stream processing. As part of the U-SQL Compiler and Language team; you will be a part of a small team focused on language design, compiler theory, logical plans, code generation and advancing our analytical capabilities, with the opportunity to work across the compute stack; from query optimization, to scalable execution, and parallelizable scheduling.

This position offers an opportunity to learn the leading edge research in the field of big data analytics, have real businesses that depend upon your technology daily, while having the ability to iterate with our internal customers on innovative and advanced capabilities. The Azure Big Data teams build reliable, highly scalable and highly performing distributed systems for data analytics on Azure. We work with various open-source technologies like Hadoop, Yarn, etc., and make contributions to these technologies. We are creating a planetary scale storage system, which can scale to Exabyte of data (yes, that’s 18+ digits!). Azure services is building next generation globally distributed, elastic scale, multi-model cloud database services. It is designed to enable developers to build planet-scale applications. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a very agile team, take on hard distributed system problems and ship high impact features at a rapid pace. As an engineer, you have an opportunity to work on the latest technology in compute and container hosting to build a massively scalable unified cloud service framework, get to work on heterogeneous transport protocols, apply innovative algorithms for solving placement and load balancing problems at scale. We need collaborative developers who can think big, deliver on those big challenges, and along the way, change the world. We’re looking for engineers to build them from the ground up. Want to change the world with data and large-scale distributed systems? Do you want to solve challenges that you didn’t even know existed until you get to a large size? Come join us on the Azure Big data team!
