The Server Administrator will monitor and maintain the integrity, security, and availability of the organization Windows and SQL Server installations in an optimal fashion.
The Server Admin will have operational responsibility for development, test, and production environments with the IT Department as the primary customer.
One of the primary responsibilities of The Server Admin will be to provision and administer Windows servers in a virtualized environment.
These servers run the gamut from database servers, web servers, file servers, and application servers including both in-house developed as well as vendor applications. In addition, The Server Admin will conduct performance and disk space monitoring to assist with capacity planning and reorganization, which could involve moving files, databases, and applications between servers.
While development is not a responsibility, a good working knowledge of any .NET language or PowerShell will be useful for common tasks related to automation and system monitoring. Other important duties include the backup, archival, and recovery of files, following a scheduled patch cycle, auditing the security of the infrastructure, and tracking software license usage.
While other departments manage the network, Active Directory, and virtualization infrastructure, a firm understanding of the technologies and protocols surrounding those functions will be important for troubleshooting as well as building a solid relationship with those groups.
The majority of the work for this position can be completed during normal business hours, but there will be requirements for off-hour work, including but not limited to, applying patches, meeting deadlines, and disaster recovery.
The person applying for this position must have a high attention to detail yet be able to see the large picture to understand the impact of changes and activities across systems. He or she must be able to communicate clearly including proper grammar and spelling. This person will be operating as the sole administrator therefore must be self-reliant and able to think through and resolve issues without constant management direction. Strong organization skills are required to document procedures and issue resolutions for backup coverage. This position also has exposure to HIPAA data and therefore a track record of integrity is also necessary.
