Service Design Intern - Adaptive Path

The Company

At Capital One, we think big and do big things. We were the first company to develop and offer mass customization and personalization of credit card products, and we have been innovating relentlessly ever since. Today, we are a high-tech company, a scientific laboratory, and a nationally recognized brand all in one. We are a passionate and entrepreneurial team with heart – a team that embraces bold ideas, fosters collaboration, and delivers world-class products and services.

Still founder-led by Chairman and CEO Richard Fairbank, we dare to dream, disrupt and deliver a better way for our customers, the financial industry, and for each other. Our goal is simple: bring ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity to an industry ripe for change.

Do you want to change the way the world interacts with its money? Do you have the desire to work and learn alongside some of the best designers in the industry? Do you want to join us in our mission to change banking for good?

Then we want you!

The Role

Service designers flex from being strategic to tactical and from being creative and participatory in the design process to pragmatic and analytical. They are gifted storytellers and connectors. As a service design intern, you will work alongside service designers, visual designers, and design managers in the service design practice on highly strategic projects across the organization.

You will have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned from your studies to real world service design challenges. You will also receive mentorship from industry-leading designers and have the opportunity to network with design industry professionals, both inside the service design practice and across Capital One.

Our interns will learn methods and gain new skills by working with us on service design projects both large and small. Similarly, we want you to bring new methods and techniques to our practice.

About You

Designers who take pride in their work but have a humble approach thrive at Capital One. You should be able to contribute as a designer across the project lifecycle, with comfort and fluency as a researcher, strategist, and designer. You employ design thinking methods to uncover insights to inform design decisions. You are an excellent communicator and feel comfortable presenting your work to others.

We are seeking intern candidates with the following:

  • Fluency with the human-centered design process, from research to ideation to execution; the ability to contribute across research, analysis, synthesis, prototyping, and implementation
  • A service design approach that strives for value creation not only for customers but also for employees and the business
  • The ability to design at various levels of zoom, from interactions and touchpoints to products and services to end-to-end journeys
  • Exceptional skill and craft in an area of design practice (e.g., communication design, industrial design, interaction design, design research, etc.)
  • Confidence collaborating with and articulating ideas to fellow designers and business partners alike
  • Passion for doing great design work and empathy for people

  • Online or digital portfolio of your work showing your contribution to research, design, and execution (Behance, Squarespace, PDF, etc are fine)
  • Professional communication style, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude in service design methods

Preferred qualifications—extra credit

  • Great presentation and public speaking skills
  • Experience with teaching or training
  • Knowledge and fluency in business processes
  • Stellar communication design skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • You will obtain a bachelor’s degree or higher between December 2017 and August 2018

The Service Design practice is based in San Francisco, though we travel frequently to work with other designers and business partners across the organization. During your internship, you will primarily work out of the office at San Francisco’s Pier 1, with occasional visits to other Capital One offices in San Francisco and potentially travel to other Capital One campuses.

Applications are due by March 1, 2017, 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.
