Microsoft AI & Research has a scale computing effort to do exactly that and is looking for a highly motivated and capable individual who can add strategic vision that contributes to the team success. This will be a team engineer position and require exemplary contribution and team collaboration skills. System/Cloud Engineer supporting 1,500+ servers maintaining production systems for Microsoft researchers to use from around the world. Responsible for maintaining the smooth operation of many Azure, Windows HPC, Hadoop and GPU Server clusters as well as their associated storage arrays, networks, alerting systems and resource reservation systems. The position requires a breadth of skills including Azure, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, automated deployment, SQL, IIS, networking and hardware familiarity.

Daily Responsibilities

• Monitor alerting systems for hardware failures, driver and firmware deficiencies and security updates, addressing issues as they arise

• Perform checklist to determine status of production facilities and troubleshoot any errors found

• Manage vendor relationships to effectively track warranty parts replacement and open issue status

• Maintain and deploy Azure, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, server images and on premise resources

• Escalate engineering issues as needed to team members or hardware vendors

• Respond to customer requests for support

• Troubleshoot networking, deployment and usability issues throughout the environments - Coordination with Data Center staff for hands-on tasks

• Update and maintain documentation and team knowledgebase

• Update and troubleshoot team SharePoint/One Note repositories and customer-facing portal

• Update and troubleshoot data collection and reporting systems

Ongoing responsibilities

• Design, test, and validate new hardware/service offerings and infrastructure components

• Partner with management and other teams to establish evolutionary services and technologies

• Plan maintenance, automation and service contracts for hardware lifecycle roadmaps

• Budget for upgrades, additions, services, infrastructure, maintenance and bandwidth

• Liaise with researchers, Online Services, corporate infrastructure teams and outside data sources for solutions

• Partner with Microsoft product groups to help improve the overall offering by Microsoft

Basic Qualifications:

• 5-7 years’ experience managing and troubleshooting Windows and Linux Server

• 1-2 years’ experience with Microsoft Azure, High Performance Computing (HPC), Hadoop and GPU deployment, troubleshooting and design

• 1-2 years’ experience managing IIS websites and application pools on production systems

• 3-4 years managing and troubleshooting TCP/IP networks

• 3-4 years managing AD objects, OUs, Group Policies, NTFS and share permissions

Preferred Qualifications:

• In depth knowledge of imaging technologies and deployment techniques

• Knowledge and experience with Open Source tools and components

• Proficiency in deploying and troubleshooting disk arrays

• Proficiency in troubleshooting hardware level errors and replacing server parts

• Familiarity with Cisco and Arista Switch configurations for VLAN assignment, channel grouping and port configuration

• In depth knowledge of TCP/IP, High Bandwidth, network routing and protocol analysis

• Proficiency in managing SQL servers for basic administration

• Installation, moves, backup, restore, maintenance plans

• MCSE or MCP certification in Azure, Windows Server, Windows Networking, IIS, SQL

• CCNA or greater Cisco certification or coursework

• ITIL Foundation certification or coursework

• Excellent customer service attitude and communication skills

• Experience managing outstanding work through alerting and ticketing systems, including prioritization and delegation of work.

• Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly

• Self-starter, works well with little oversight and prioritizes own work appropriately
