Social Worker MSW - HCAT (Health Crisis Assessment Team)

The Gulf Coast Division Office is looking for a Social Worker- HCAT


  • The HCAT Social Worker serves as a behavioral health consultant to physicians by providing specialized care to patients experiencing psychiatric distress.
  • The HCAT Social Worker conducts behavioral health assessments to determine a provisional diagnosis and recommend a safe discharge plan of care for patients.
  • Patients are predominantly in the emergency department or admitted to the medical units of HCA hospitals.
  • The HCAT Social Worker interacts with patient, family and medical staff via tele-video and telephone technology.
  • Assess patients experiencing psychiatric distress and provide provisional psychiatric diagnosis utilizing DSM V.
  • Conduct thorough suicidal risk assessment.
  • Effectively communicate plan of care recommendations to physician, nurse, case manager, and other essential personnel.
  • Collaborate with professionals in all levels of the healthcare team to solve challenging issues that affect patient care.
  • Transitional treatment modalities most used are psycho-education, solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, and supportive counseling. Other duties include reviewing clinical packets for inpatient psychiatric admission; and managing community and crisis calls.


License / Certifications:
  • Requires LMSW, LPC or LMFT in the state of Texas.

  • Requires Masters Degree in Social Work or Counseling.

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience conducting crisis assessments, preferably within an emergency medical model.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in autonomous environment.
  • Ability to work in fast paced, high energy and stressful environment.
  • Inquisitive and proactive characteristics are preferred.
  • Ability to provide crisis intervention and engage multiple systems in diagnostic formulation and disposition.
  • Cognizant of dynamic relationship between patient experience and customer service.
  • Regular practice of self-care.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to concentrate and work amidst distractions such as noise, conversation and foot traffic; ability to handle interruptions often and move from one task to another; must be able to manage frustration tolerance.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to interview patients via tele-video technology, communicate telephonically, and complete documentation in electronic medical records. Work shifts are increments of 8, 10 and 12 hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Primary work setting is an office environment.
  • Occasionally, travel to local hospitals to conduct in person assessments is necessary.
