Software Engineer II
Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure and Operations (MCIO) enables the growth of all of Microsoft’s Cloud businesses by optimizing and automating the management of the physical infrastructure powering the cloud. Cloud services promise elastic scale and seemingly infinite capacity. A key challenge in realizing this promise is delivering the right hardware capacity at the right time and to the right location. We are building new scalable, distributed software systems from the ground up to manage hardware capacity planning and logistics for the millions of machines in datacenters around the world that serve Xbox Live, Office 365, Azure, Exchange, Bing and more.
The Reservations Team creates software which enables us to get the hardware inside the datacenters in an efficient and timely fashion. We do so by comparing the physical space, power, and cooling requirements of racks against the availability of given datacenters in order to optimize server placements. The system is similar to an airline reservation system, but with more variables. With the goal of completely automating hardware planning, ordering and placement, Reservation software engineers work on complex algorithms to maximize/optimize usage of different resources and minimize waste over time. The Reservation Team has the opportunity to have a huge impact to Microsoft, and the potential to save millions of dollars by reducing cycle time, reducing costs and removing variability from the process. If you want to have a truly huge impact, are comfortable working in a start-up/v1 effort, are motivated by solving hard business process problems with technology, and enjoy a continuous learning environment, this could be the position for you.
