Software Engineer II

Be a part of developing the core windowing infrastructure for Windows, powering system and application experiences across all Microsoft devices, including Desktop, Xbox, HoloLens, Phone, IoT, and more. With Windows 10 and Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform (UWP) comes the need for a unified, modern windowing platform that can scale to meet the needs of a rich set of device hardware. Our focus is to deliver the windowing infrastructure, manage the UWP application lifecycle, and provide developer-facing APIs to both internal and external customers. We are tightly integrated with other components across the system, including the Shell UX layer, input and foreground management subsystems, kernel execution and resource management components, application frameworks (such as XAML, WWA, Silverlight, and DirectX), and the compositor platform.

Qualified candidates will thrive in a team-oriented environment in which developers are skilled at low-level design and implementation and will grow into a role where they are able to tackle large architectural features that are integrated into a complex and distributed code base with deep system integration. Willingness to take on big challenges, dive deep into code across the operating system, and develop a keen understanding of customer scenarios both inside and outside of Microsoft are key elements to success.

Basic qualifications:

• 4+ years of C/C++/C# industry experience developing and shipping system-level software
• Solid design, coding, debugging, and analytical skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to solve hard problems
• Experience working with multithreading, contention, and preemption

Experience with any of the following is a plus:

• Developing platform components, SDKs, or APIs
• COM, WinRT, or other communications protocols
• Building applications for Windows, iOS, or Android platforms
• Distributed architecture, client/server communication, low-latency data storage and retrieval
• Discrete state machines
