Primary Job Responsibilities

If you answered yes to the above questions, then the eBay Shipping Science team is the place for you! We are looking for self-motivated and talented software engineers at various levels of seniority to develop the next generation of predictive products which power eBay’s shipping solutions. In this role you will be responsible for developing solutions end-to-end, working side-by-side with our data scientists to implement state-of-the art machine learning models at eBay scale and integrating with our production systems. Here are some of the problems we are working on:

  • Determining an item’s weight and dimensions from a human-readable description

  • Finding the ideal shipping method for a given item, taking into account buyer behavior and inferred item characteristics

  • Using predictive analytics to determine item delivery dates

  • Inferring similarity between items described in different locales

In this role, you will:

  • Design and implement projects throughout all phases of the software development life cycle

  • Work with engineers and other cross functional teams to develop great software that meets market needs with respect to functionality, reliability, performance, scalability

  • Implement proof-of-concept prototypes for data collection, analysis and presentation

  • Perform occasional defect analysis to identify issues with the models and work with the data scientists on root-cause analysis and model improvements

  • Deploy systems to production, analyze results offline/online, and measure site impact

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other team members

  • The usual engineering activities – scoping, prioritizing, planning, bug fixing, site rollout, documentation, having fun

  • Be passionate about being a customer advocate and delivering high-quality designs and components that horizontally scale. You must be creative in solving hard problems in our high scale systems and unafraid to think out-of-the- box

Basic Qualifications

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field

  • Outstanding coding skills in Java, C++, C#, or similar

  • Excellent understanding of computer science fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms

  • Great design and problem solving skills, passion for quality and engineering excellence at scale

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Track record of deploying cutting-edge technology in an industrial setting

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, iterative development environment

  • Expertise in machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, natural language processing, and/or distributed systems highly preferred
