The Specialist, Safety & Environment is responsible for providing compliant environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs to operating departments at the West Point site. Acts as site program leader for Industrial Hygiene and Chemical Safety Program. Integrates EHS programs into daily operations to assure regulatory compliance, achieves continuous performance improvement, meeting EHS performance objectives. Partners with operations to develop objectives to achieve these goals in alignment with site business goals and values. Performs responsibilities and addresses problems with limited supervision.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Completes chemical and physical exposure risk assessments, hazard assessments, industrial hygiene monitoring, process safety analysis, incident investigations, environmental regulatory field analysis, support for environmental reports and permit applications.
  • Utilizes a variety of industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling and analytical equipment and instruments to evaluate chemical and noise exposures; maintains detailed records of sampling activities.
  • Conducts routine and follow-up industrial hygiene surveys of site facilities and departments; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of site-wide industrial hygiene program elements, including Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Indoor Air Quality, Asbestos, Local Exhaust Ventilation and Ergonomics; participates in formulating maintenance / remediation strategies and policies.
  • Interprets regulations, guidelines, resources and reference information on industrial hygiene program elements, and advises site personnel on related issues and recommends safe practices.
  • Interacts with departments to correct non-compliance issues, including follow-up on correction actions.
  • Reviews processes, facilities, procedures and management of change documents to assure conformance to recognized EHS regulations, standards and guidelines.
  • Develops EHS procedures, guidelines and training programs as assigned.
  • Advises employees on occupational health programs related to chemical and physical hazards.
  • Provides support to client groups in completing injury/illness analysis, training, self-assessments and addressing specific EHS concerns as they are raised.
  • Provides leadership to formation and sustained performance of action oriented EHS committees.
  • Assures completion of all regulatory submissions, notifications, etc. required to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local EHS requirements.



Qualifications:
Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's Degree required (concentration in Industrial Hygiene or Safety or Environmental related technical discipline preferred)


Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of 3 years applied professional EHS work experience.
  • A t least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified in the job description.
  • Intermediate proficiency in the areas of industrial hygiene, chemical safety and management, lab safety, general safety and environmental compliance, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Basic level of skill with project management and problem solving.


Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Relevant professional certification(s) including CIH.
  • Relevant professional experience supporting pharmaceutical industry and/or research labs.
