Job Summary

Adjusts or provides technical supervision on major and complex losses. Trains other claim employees in the area of expertise. Assists with reinspections and file reviews. May assist Team Leaders and Management personnel with technical support for adjusting claims. May provide technical file review for staff claims representatives. Provides technical analysis of loss trends. Assists with technical claims policy and procedure development and evaluation. Assists with litigation and complaint resolution. Will also be required to maintain an active adjusters license in states where required.

Essential Job Functions

Adjusts large or complex losses in their entirety. Responsible for completing all procedural requirements. Responsible for completing proper investigations on complex losses. Provides technical analysis of and responds to complaints or inquiries. May assist with catastrophes throughout the operating territory. Maintains control of assigned Suits vs. Exchange and other litigated specialty files. Monitors and controls legal expenses. Attends litigation conferences, arbitration hearings and trials as necessary. Completes quality assurance reviews and service reviews. Analyzes indemnity costs and expenses. May travel throughout the operating territory to assist with complex losses and training. May be responsible for the training of Claims personnel. Reviews Commercial Claims Office operations for compliance with company procedures and quality assurance evaluations. Reports findings, making specific comments and recommendations on any adverse trends or procedural deviations. Recommends limits of monetary authority for supervisory and field personnel within the limit of prescribed policy. Trains and counsels supervisory personnel in areas of expertise, participates in Commercial Claims training programs; and monitors quality and adequacy of training programs administered by claims offices. Assists Team Leaders in the evaluation of the technical abilities of specialty Claims Representatives and Claims Associates. Investigates, confirms coverage, determines liability, establishes damages, reports status and negotiates the settlement of assigned cases (has authority to make payment of assigned claims within prescribed limits). Adjusts all types of claims. Performs most duties on an individual basis, and work has a direct bearing on Management results. Represents the Company from a public relations standpoint and must conduct oneself as a member of Management at all times. Personal contacts are a major part of activity and include policyholders, claimants, agents, witnesses, repair facilities, contractors, police and fire departments, state and county fraud and arson personnel, special investigators, attorneys, expert witnesses, members of the medical profession and all other persons incident to the investigation and processing of claims. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment, but with exposure to some or all of the following environments when in the field: Uncontrolled outside environmental conditions Excessive Noise Levels Chemicals Chemical/Biological Conditions Moving Mechanical Parts Areas considered dangerous Conditions, which could affect the respiratory system or skin such as: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, oils, smoke, soot, or poor ventilation.

Education Requirements

Four-year college degree. Completion of, or actively pursuing a major insurance designation.

Experience Requirements

Successful demonstration/completion of the Claims Special General Adjuster prerequisites, proficiencies, and exams, as required based on unit of assignment. External candidates should have a minimum of six years of prior General Liability claims experience with a heavy concentration handling coverage issues. The same time-on-job requirement is preferred for internal candidates.
