The Johnson & Johnson Law Department seeks a Senior Counsel – Real Estate, Construction and Engineering to be based in New Brunswick, NJ who will be the primary legal support for Johnson & Johnson’s Worldwide Real Estate, Construction and Engineering organizations. This position will be part of the Supply Chain & Procurement group within the Johnson & Johnson Law Department, report to the Worldwide Vice President Law, Supply Chain & Procurement, and have other direct reports, including two leasing/real estate specialists reporting to it.

As the lead attorney for the Construction and Engineering organization, you will work closely with the business and be directly responsible for drafting and negotiating architectural, design and construction agreements for Johnson & Johnson affiliates in the United States. Additionally, you will be responsible for coordinating similar activities outside the United States in collaboration with other Johnson & Johnson attorneys and/or outside counsel. These agreements are critical to Johnson & Johnson’s business in that they help ensure the efficient operation of hundreds of manufacturing, research and administrative facilities in more than 60 countries. Working with your Worldwide Construction and Engineering colleagues, you will also continually keep abreast of market trends as well as legal and regulatory developments to ensure that legal support you provide is innovative, agile and appropriately adapted to the evolving environment.
As the lead attorney for the Real Estate organization, you will also be directly responsible for providing legal support for significant real estate buy/sell transactions, and addressing significant zoning, easement, subdivision and ownership questions.
This position also entails the supervision and management of two leasing/real estate specialists who provide day-to-day legal support for a large number of leasing projects and provide guidance to our businesses on such matters as deed, title and zoning issues, certain real estate buy/sell transactions, real estate due diligence and other matters in connection with acquisitions and divestitures, and the maintenance of J&J’s real estate databases. Additionally, this team provides real estate support for JLabs – Johnson & Johnson’s new business model, which entails making state-of-the-art, J&J-owned or operated laboratories and equipment available to early stage companies in the medical device, biotech, consumer and pharmaceutical spaces at several locations around the world. Your team is an integral part of this effort, preparing the requisite documentation to support relationships with the tenants and other interested parties at these facilities.
Although not a prerequisite, experience with environmental matters, including CERCLA, the Clean Water Act, RCRA, and the SDWA is desirable, as this position could also coordinate providing legal advice with, the assistance of outside counsel and other Johnson & Johnson attorneys on such matters, as well as advice on establishing Johnson & Johnson positions and policies with regard to environmental matters.
• A minimum of 7-10 years’ experience representing corporations in complex real estate purchase and sales transactions, leasing transactions, and other real estate matters is required.
• A minimum of a Juris Doctor is required.
• Authorized to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction is required.
• Ability to collaborate with business partners, stakeholders, internal attorneys, and outside counsel is required.
• Experience with construction and engineering contracts and related regulations in United States as well as globally is preferred.
• Experience leading teams of people is preferred.
• Environmental law experience including experience with environmental matters, including CERCLA, the Clean Water Act, RCRA, and the SDWA is preferred.
