Role Description
The Corporate Controllers organization provides financial information for the company. to management, shareholders, and regulators. In addition to the consolidation and analysis of the monthly financial submissions from businesses around the globe, the Controllers organization is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting policies and guidance, ensuring adequate financial controls are in place, and addressing the ever-changing business and regulatory requirements. To better meet these needs the Controller Organization is an active partner with the worldwide finance leaders and business operations teams, advising on the appropriate accounting and financial reporting for ongoing, new and proposed activities or transactions. Additionally, Corporate Controllers is actively involved in influencing the regulatory environment by interfacing with government and financial organizations such as the SEC and the FEI, preparing responses on behalf of the Company when changes or new accounting rules and regulations are proposed.
Reporting to the VP, Controllers (Business Development, Valuations & Technical Accounting), the Sr. Director, Technical Accounting will provide technical analysis of the standard setting activities of the FASB/SEC, ensuring that accounting policies and procedures are up-to-date and responsive; providing technical accounting and policy advisory services in all areas of accounting to Controller team members and the global Finance & Business Operations organization; developing technical accounting training programs for the global finance organization; and influencing the regulatory environment on behalf of the Company.

The role operates in a highly matrixed environment and it is imperative that the Sr. Director has strong collaboration skills and the ability to partner effectively with stakeholders at multiple levels within the organization, in addition to liaising with external and internal auditors on accounting and reporting issues. The Sr. Director, Technical Accounting will manage two senior colleagues and strong leadership skills are important.

This is highly influential role that will contribute to overall Finance strategy and collaborate on complex issues with financial reporting and accounting implications.

Overall responsibilities:
• Tracking activity of Standard Setting in the US (and of the IASB), analyzing potential impact to the company, preparing comment letters with the company views on new proposed accounting standards.
• Preparing or revising Controller's Accounting Policies and Procedures to reflect new accounting pronouncements or guidance, to improve clarity or to respond to changing circumstances.
• Special projects, as identified, concerning accounting and reporting concerns.
• Responding to operating and staff division's training needs related to accounting and reporting by providing web-based or on-site training programs.
• Liaising with external advisors on quarterly and year-end issues raised by the international markets.
• Reviewing internal and external audit comment letters. Identifying any control weaknesses that would require a need to emphasize existing Company accounting policies and procedures or to establish new policies and procedures.
• Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and seminars and reading professional publications.
• Provide Accounting Expertise (in consultation with Controllers leadership)
• Proactively provides timely guidance and expertise to global Controllership and Finance teams on accounting issues, guaranteeing compliance with U.S. GAAP, Corporate Policies and SEC rules. Respond to day to day questions on accounting and reporting and providing guidance by analyzing data and assumptions and formulating possible alternatives, while recognizing when to involve others.
• Provide functional endorsement and technical accounting memos for new or changing strategies, transactions, initiatives and activities.
• Engages in and provides accounting advisory services, including the in-depth review, development, and design of accounting practices to be applied by Finance and Business Operations teams.
• Advises Finance leadership regarding complex financial accounting and reporting issues and transaction structuring, offering alternate scenarios and solutions as appropriate.

Financial Reporting
• Provides oversight and reviews of selected areas as part of the preparation of Form 10K/10Q in accordance with US GAAP and SEC requirements.
• Assists in the implementation of both financial reporting and management reporting changes where required.
• Works with our external and internal auditors in understanding and resolving concerns.

Controls / Compliance
• Responsible for identifying and implementing control and process improvements, and simplification measures, related to the collective responsibilities of this role.
• Provides guidance on accounting policies and procedures in accordance with Corporate policy to help ensure proper compliance.
• Works with GRCC (Global Risk, Compliance and Control) and Corporate Audit, where necessary, to understand concerns and support remediation action steps.
• Partners with Corporate Audit Staff and Controller team members to drive closure of open audit issues and proactively work to prevent future issues/manage risk and provides senior leaders with status updates as appropriate.
• Develops a strong relationship between Technical Accounting and our external auditors and serves as one of external auditors key points of contact on Technical Accounting related financial accounting issues.
• Proactively flags controls concerns and recommends improvements.

• Monitor, administer and maintain our set of global Financial Policies.
• Interprets and implements the company Accounting Policies and Procedures and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles with direction from the Assistant Controller and Corporate Controller. Drives consistent and effective policy guidance globally, while understanding and considering the perspectives of the global markets.
• Review the company US GAAP accounting policies and ensure they provide clear direction to accounting personnel when applying US GAAP to the company business activities.

• Proactively identifies new accounting standards applicable to the company. When appropriate, develops assessment strategy and leads implementation plan, in conjunction with impacted constituents. Examples could include the ASC 606 -Revenue with Contracts from Customers, ASC 842 -Leases, etc.
• Work closely with Corporate Audit, finance and operations to assess and manage financial risk, as necessary.
• Ensures effective, clear and timely communications to aid in enabling appropriate execution of US GAAP accounting rules and Company policies.

Stakeholder Engagement & Leadership
• Builds strong collaborative relationships, open transparent communication, and effective partnership and coordination with global stakeholders
• Works as a team member and assists other in Controllers/Finance in navigating issues and providing guidance with regards to execution or implementation of accounting and financial reporting related items within their respective areas of responsibilities.
• Ensures effective, clear and timely communications to aid in enabling appropriate execution of US GAAP accounting rules and Company policies.
• Leads various projects, manages change, and drive improvements. Ensures training on accounting principles and changes in company policies is provided as needed.
• Coordinates issues with the Consolidations and External Reporting groups
• Demonstrates strong supervisory, management and leadership skills

Training, Education and Experience:
• BA required
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with a minimum of 5 years' experience with a Big 4 accounting firm.
• MBA or advanced degree in finance or accounting a plus
• Big 4 national office experience is a significant plus
• 15+ years of diversified experience with a solid foundation in Accounting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in US GAAP and SEC rules; strong technical and analytical accounting skills

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement:
• Excellent oral and written communication skills enabling effective communication with all levels of management; able to communicate complex concepts in a concise manner. Ability to work as a member of a team.
• Proven ability to work across functions and positively influence outcomes when there is not direct reporting line.
• Experience in a leadership role at a global company, with life sciences or other manufacturing operations preferred.
• Demonstrated track record of delivering results in a complex matrixed organization.
• Ability to make decisions and influence others.
• Experience working across multiple levels (including executive level), functions and regions
• Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing talent

Technical Skills:
• Demonstrated proficiency in US GAAP, SEC Rules, FASB and IFRS;
• Demonstrated experience with technical accounting research; experience understanding, interpreting and applying US GAAP and SEC accounting rules, including complex technical accounting areas.
• Knowledge of accounting rules, processes and financial statement disclosure requirements, and strong business acumen.
• Drives issues to resolution
• Strong analytic skills: able to clearly link financial results to operational performance drivers, generate alternatives and drive positive change.
• Experience successfully leading projects/process improvement within operations/finance function involving process improvement; able to quickly grasp new ideas.
• Experience with ERP systems

Business travel required, including international locations (approx.. 5-10%)
