Team leadership, software engineering, and data analysis skills combined with the demands of a high volume, highly-visible analytics platform make this an exciting challenge for the right candidate.

As the leader of the VPA (Video Platform Analytics) team in the Video Insights and Analysis (VIA) organization, you will be responsible for guiding a team working across the analytics delivery chain-using a mix of open source, internally developed, and commercial software. Yourself and your teammates will be an integral part of providing the operational intelligence that guides the VIDEO organization's financial and engineering investment as we deliver the next generation of IP video services.

Who does the senior manager work with?

The person in this position will lead a highly skilled engineering team that includes data engineers, data analysts, data scientists, testers, and DevOps engineers. The manager will work with other supervisors, managers, project managers, and platform owners to deliver on an analytics strategy in direct pursuit of improving the quality and reliability of Comcast's IP video services.

What are some interesting problems you'll be working on?

The manager will provide leadership and oversight to all aspects of a team charted with the development of systems capable of processing billions of events per day, providing both a real time and historical view into the operation of our IP video systems and the quality of our customer's experiences.

  • Design data collection and enrichment systems for scale and reliability
  • Work on high performance in-memory real-time data stores and a massive historical data store
  • Produce reports, conduct analysis, and provide product insights to the broader VIDEO organization
  • Help shape how our organization manages data across systems

The VIDEO organization is building the core components needed to drive the next generation of television. Running this infrastructure, identifying trouble spots, and optimizing the overall user experience is a challenge that can only be met with a robust big data architecture capable of providing insights that would otherwise be drowned in a sea of data.

Success in this role is best enabled by a broad mix of skills and interests that include strong team leadership skills, distributed systems software engineering prowess, and a background in the multidisciplinary field of data science.

Skills & Requirements

Core responsibilities:

  • Lead an engineering team in the development of large-scale distributed systems. Oversee implementation initiatives, software updates, and the roll-out of new software releases.
  • Recruit, hire, and develop high-performing engineers
  • Implement strategies to bring greater focus and attention on data collection, management, and analytics which advance Comcast's overall vision and business goals.
  • Identify opportunities to contribute to the body of knowledge used by business executives and engineering leaders to direct engineering and financial investment specifically in the areas of service quality and service reliability.
  • Translate analytical opportunities into technical approaches that yield actionable insights

Job Specification

Basic qualifications:

  • Strong leadership abilities demonstrated over the course of several years while leading a team of high performers
  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • A BS or MS in Computer Science or in a related field
  • Experience with large scale data collection and management software including but not limited to Hadoop, Kafka, Storm, Flume, Spark
  • Excellent communication skills; able to analyze and clearly articulate complex issues and technologies in an engaging and understandable fashion
  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure and technologies
  • An understanding of agile software delivery patterns

Preferred qualifications:

  • Success in developing and deploying software for a high-volume, highly scalable and fault-tolerant environment
  • Java and/or Scala proficiency
  • Experience with high throughput data analytics including query patterns, batch vs real-time processing, ingest transformations and enrichment
  • A working knowledge of statistics and statistical concepts.
  • Experience with IP video technologies

About Comcast VIA and VADER (VIDEO Acquisition Deployment Engineering & Research)

The Video Insights and Analysis (VIA) team's charter spans the analytics value chain and includes the data engineering, data science, and software engineering required to deliver insights to our teammates. We're part of the VADER Organization, a department within Comcast's VIDEO division which supports a mix of video related activities including signal acquisition, deployment, site reliability engineering and content Management. We support both legacy QAM delivery and IP video infrastructure that's been built to deliver a broad mix of on-demand video, live TV streams and an assortment of other digital media to an array of connected devices in the home.
