  • The Staff Product Engineer uses knowledge of good engineering practice to support field-based technical service engineering through capital product sustainability and applications engineering.
  • The position will be responsible for conducting effective (e.g. timely, accurate, complete, etc.) investigations of field-based identified issues with installation and service of capital as well as product components/materials, design, serviceability in order to prevent, or eliminate/significantly reduce the probability of the problem from reoccurring.
  • The position leads or participates in highly complex projects requiring cross-functional support and participation. It will apply broad engineering knowledge independently and within a team to enhance product serviceability and performance during the whole product lifecycle.
  • The position will also support all phases of product enhancement, including setup and execution of sustaining engineering projects.
  • These phases include but are not limited to root-cause analysis, risk assessment, designing and conducting investigative studies, statistical analysis of data sets, and formulation of business-effective solutions based on the change analysis of cross-functional impact, and implementation plans for achieving the desired long-term outcome.
  • The Staff Product Engineer will have a strong background in standard engineering principles/processes, servicing concepts and techniques as well as the possible requirement of working knowledge of other product-related disciplines such as chemistry and/or microbiology.
  • Product focus is typically on electro-mechanical capital equipment and related accessories, thus familiarity with systems engineering and system reliability/maintainability is desired.
  • The Staff Product Engineer  will have capabilities within the company defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for product troubleshooting, analysis of field-based issues and has highly-effective verbal (e.g. phone and web conferencing) and written communication skills.
  • The Staff Product Engineer will act as the intermediary between ASP Irvine and field-based personnel.
  • The Staff Product Engineer will take both field-based and cross-functional input into consideration throughout the product engineering process and as such strong communication skills, tenacity, and willingness to listen actively are required.
  • During the course of the product engineering processes, results and on-going updates to management and field-based personnel are paramount and will result in recommendations based on gathered information and data.
  • Additionally, guidance and work direction will be provided to lower level engineers and related project team members. On occasion the successful candidate will provide field-based troubleshooting and on occasion hands-on product training to field-based customers. 

  • A minimum of seven (7) years related experience and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Engineering or a Master’s Degree in Engineering with a minimum of five (5) years of related experience or a PhD with at least two (2) years related experience is required.
  • A degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is highly preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot on electrical and/or electro-mechanical equipment is required.
  • Strong root-cause analysis and communication skills are required.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry is required.
  • Medical device industry experience is preferred.
  • Basic project management skills or the ability to learn are desirable.
  • Experience in fluid dynamics preferred.
  • This position is located in Irvine, CA and requires up to 20% domestic and international travel.
