The  Strand Processors produce absorbable suture strands including Rackwinding, Tipping, and Cutting.  They are also responsible for inspecting sutures for defects and work in accordance with process specifications and procedures      

Essential Functions:

  • Use rackwinding machine to wind spools of Silk, Braided Nylon, Polyester, Vicryl, and Orthocord material onto racks for further processing
  • Perform random tension and diameter checks of wound material
  • Lift racks (5 to 10 lbs.) and place in rackwinding machine
  • Remove racks of material and place onto rack holder
  • Complete the Device History Record and other related forms using Good Documentation Practices
  • Mix solution and accurately weigh, measure, and mix chemicals for use in dewaxing and tipping suture end on racks
  • Fill dewax and tipping tanks with appropriate chemicals and maintain proper level in tanks
  • Retrieve racks of suture material from carts and place in tanks for tipping and dewaxing
  • Maintain proper viscosity of tipping solution
  • Transfer racks from tipping tanks to carts for drying
  • Accurately measure and mix chemicals for rackwashing process
  • Wash racks in chemical solution;  Remove adhered suture material
  • Return clean racks to bins
  • Complete the Device History Record and other related forms using Good Documentation Practices
  • Inspect the quality of strands on racks; Identify, remove, and replace defective strands
  • Cut remaining strands from racks
  • Measure tip diameter and enter data into LIMS
  • Measure length of strand tips
  • Wrap strand ends together in predetermined amounts and label for subsequent processing
  • Verify labels
  • Complete the Device History Record and other related forms using Good Documentation Practices

Other Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately complete records as defined within the job procedures (e.g. manual and/or electronic documentation)
  • Support LEAN and Six Sigma Initiatives
  • Support Maintenance Excellence (ME2) including 6S and Operator Asset Care
  • Comply with all federally regulated programs
  • Adhere to J&J environmental and safety policies and guidelines
  • Comply with all job specific safety procedures and utilize PPE when necessary
  • Comply with quality system requirements as defined within procedures and instructions
  • Use test equipment (Starett Gauge, Mitutoyo Gauge, Microscope, etc.) where applicable
  • Utilize applicable software systems as needed for the job (e.g. ComplianceWire, ADAPTIV, etc.)
  • Consistently meet required work performance targets (RE’s), if applicable
  • Consistently meet required Training due date targets

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 1+ years of related experience required
  • Basic math skills required (add, subtract, multiply, divide, averaging, percentages, rounding, and tolerances)
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office required; CAM Star and LIMS experience preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relation skills required.

  • Must be willing and able to meet the physical requirements which includes:  Lifting/carrying 0-30 lbs., lifting from ground to knees, lifting from ground to waist, lifting from ground to shoulders, lifting from waist to shoulders, lifting from waist to overhead, overhead work including pushing/pulling/reaching, standing, sitting and walking
  • Vision requirements include:  Far point acuity, near point acuity, color perception (blues, greens, reds, violets, yellows, white)
  • Must be willing and able to work the 2 and/or 3 shifts (2:45pm – 11:15pm & 10:45pm – 7:15am)
