Panasonic Corporation is working with Tesla Motors, Inc. to manufacture photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules for solar panels at Tesla’s Solar City factory in Buffalo, New York.
Panasonic's role will be to manufacture and supply PV cells and modules with unique heterojunction photovoltaic cells, combining a crystalline silicon wafer with an amorphous silicon layer. Products will feature industry-leading module conversion efficiency and outstanding temperature coefficient characteristics.
The collaboration will make optimum use of both companies’ strengths to enhance the competitiveness of their products, generating a synergy effect between Panasonic’s technological and manufacturing expertise in the photovoltaic business and Tesla’s strong sales channels, rich creativity and market-leading, cutting-edge innovation.
The factory’s production began in the summer of 2017. By expanding the scale of production capacity over time, Panasonic expects to reach production capacity of over 1 GW (GigaWatt) by 2019. Tesla is making a long-term purchase commitment to Panasonic for products manufactured at the Solar City factory.

The Supply Chain Specialist is responsible for all aspects of supplier management, including sourcing , assessment , on boarding , qualification , development , contract negotiations , KPI performance and continuous improvement for both existing and new suppliers. The Supply Chain Specialist works with the design, manufacturing, material and process engineers to match supplier capabilities with design requirements. The Supply Chain Specialist is responsible for meeting and/or exceeding defined business goals for quality, delivery, service and cost. The Supply Chain Specialist will create and manage supplier risk assessment and mitigation plans. The Supply Chain Specialist has a tactical responsibility to develop improvement plans for underperforming suppliers and leading supplier business reviews. This position will require leadership of cross-functional teams to accomplish supplier improvements. Both domestic and international travel may be required.
What You’ll Get to Do:
Lead cross-functional teams to identify, qualify and on board new sources of supply that meet and/or exceed business goals for quality, delivery, service and cost
Ensure supplier compliance to customer flowed-down contractual requirements evidenced through annual assessment
Execute supplier risk assessments and establish mitigation plans with suppliers in support of commodity goals
Develop, on board and grow strategic suppliers for increased business volume
Lead the supplier selection process, including make versus buy analyses and transition of parts
Coordinate cross-functional support as required to support supplier development initiatives and risk mitigation activities
Support technical problem-solving efforts for systemic supplier non-conformances
Assess supplier capabilities, capacity and financial stability to meet business requirements
Lead supplier development initiatives that involves new supplier evaluation, existing supplier management, and resolution of sourcing issues
Develop knowledge for key commodities that covers market pricing, market make up and market trends
Negotiate and establish Long Term Agreements (LTA) or pricing agreements that meet business objectives with regard to cost control and guaranteed supply
What You’ll Bring:
Bachelor’s degree (vocational, professional, or advanced) in the field of supply management, engineering, business
Greater than 5 years of progressive experience (usually post-education) in the field of supply chain
Proven capabilities in procurement practices, supplier assessments, contract negotiation, supplier development, supplier management and strategic sourcing with both domestic and international sources of supply
Proven capabilities in understanding and communicating the technical aspects of the goods and services procured within a global supply environment
Blue print reading and understanding of material specifications and secondary operations
Demonstrated ability to create spreadsheets complete complex analysis
Presentation skills and ability to present to customers and suppliers
Desirable qualifications would include: Certification in Purchasing, Production and Inventory Control, Supply Chain Management, Black Belt and/or Six Sigma certified, Lean Certification
