POSITION SUMMARY :

Demonstrates general knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and supplies utilized in order to prepare the operating suite for surgery and to assist the medical team throughout the procedure. Requires a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique. The role also includes support in various other areas such as sterile processing, inventory and supplies maintenance. Provides assistance in emergency procedures as well as elective and scheduled cases. Assists in preparation, transportation and supervision of patient.
Requires working knowledge of the anatomic and physiologic characteristics of the various age groups being served, including infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and aging adult. Requires well developed interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact effectively with all internal and external customers, as needed.

The Surgical Technologist performs a variety of technical duties to assist in preparing and caring for pre-operative patients. The tasks and responsibilities include:
  • Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Prepares sterile instrument table.
  • Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
  • Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients.
  • Transports patients to and from surgical suite.
  • Positions patient according to type of surgery.
  • Assists the surgical team in surgical procedures which may include passing instruments, sponges and sutures.
  • Maintains work area.
  • Gathers equipment for cleaning and sterilization.
  • Assists in the monitoring of the patient through the procedure.
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
  • Orients and mentors new staff members.
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education Required:
• High School graduate or GED.
• Graduate from an accredited educational program for Surgical Technologist;
OR
• Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service.

For surgical technologist not meeting the education requirements above:

• Was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility before September 1, 2009 OR
• Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that service.
Education Preferred:

Experience Required: OR Tech I: 0-1 year related experience or training in surgical technician curriculum
OR Tech II: Minimum of 5 years recent experience as a Surgical Technologist if no certification
Experience Preferred: Computer skills

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES :

Required: Current BCLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
Surgical Technologists that graduate after September 1, 2009 must hold and maintain a current certification as a Surgical Technologist within 180 days from the date of graduation. The certification must be from:
1. The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor;
2. The National Center for Competency Testing or its successor;
3. Another surgical technologist certification program approved by the department

OR Tech II: Current certification (as stated above) as a Surgical Technologist if experience is less than 5 years.
