Job Description

As a publicly-held company, Brighthouse management must document and research accounting judgments involving the accounting for insurance products for both generally accepting accounting principles (GAAP) in the US and statutory accounting principles (SAP).  This position will be responsible for initial research and documentation with respect to accounting consultations involving GAAP and SAP accounting for Brighthouse’s insurance products and will work closely with the actuarial department regarding the valuation of actuarial estimates. 


This position will support the enterprise in activities related to documenting its accounting positions involving insurance products.  Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Consultations and detail memos regarding insurance products.
  • Review of new products.
  • Update accounting policies and procedures for insurance products and related topics such as reserving, deferred acquisition costs, etc.
  • Implementation of FASB’s new insurance accounting guidance for long-duration contracts.
  • Monitor other potential changes to GAAP and SAP impacting life and annuity writers.
  • Coordinate and document actuarial policies and key judgments to ensure propriety and consistent application.
  • Review reinsurance transactions.
  • Goodwill – As necessary, set-up the fair value template and coordinate completion with departments


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 8-12 years with progressive experience in technical accounting research and documentation
  • Familiarity with life and annuity products.
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP for insurance products.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAP for insurance products.
  • Working knowledge of SEC reporting.
  • Ability to deal effectively with individuals of all levels of the corporate structure
  • Ability to obtain support from various teams and Lines of Business without direct authority
  • Demonstrated experience leading critical initiatives, including project development, identifying needed resources and key milestones, and effectively monitoring progress to conclusion
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results by working independently.
  • Very strong written and oral skills.
  • Proficient use of all Microsoft Office programs, as well as Outlook
  • Graduate or undergraduate degree/major in accounting or related financial field

    Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or equivalent with 6+ years’ experience in public accounting and 2+ years in the life insurance industry preferred.

    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or other related.
