DESCRIPTION

The Materials Characterization Technician actively participates in the lab team, competitively drives results by delivery quality testing support to effect business decisions that support global growth of our Composite Solutions Business. The person in this role will provide technical support for composite materials testing by performing diverse skilled tasks in the areas of laboratory testing, new test development and implementation. In addition, the role provides fundamental support within the innovation organization on key projects and communicating test findings with innovation partners and external customers.
Reports to: Granville Materials Characterization Laboratory Leader
RESPONSIBILITIES, SCOPE, AND CONTRIBUTIONS

Live the Safety Stand or Owens Corning and Adhere to Safety Responsibilities
The Successful Candidate:
  • Ensures rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and Owens Corning corporate policies
Metrics:
  • Attend monthly safety meetings, audits, and safety days
  • Authors SOP, JHA, LLT, MOC for new method development and implementation
Execute Materials Testing in Accordance with Industry Standards
The Successful Candidate:
  • Understands the testing protocol and conducts testing per ASTM, ISO or other laboratory test methods.
  • Converts testable sample from supplied composite structures/constructions using power tools such as band saw, programmable wet-saw, and water-jet.
  • Utilizes the lab workflow process and software to manage tasks for efficient operation of lab.
Metrics:
  • Follows detailed procedures and performs testing; communicates all findings to innovation partners and customer via insightful reports.
  • Provides quality repeatable and reproducible testing results without errors in methodology and process.
Technology Mastery & Leadership
The Successful Candidate:
  • Supports development & implementation of characterization techniques/methods to expedite testing needs of Composite Solutions Business' innovation organization.
  • Applies technical expertise to develop test methods to evaluate materials quickly in support of large product development programs.
  • Actively participates in sharing and learning best practices among global labs and incorporates the learning in the lab.

  • # New characterization methods developed & implemented
  • # Ideas generated for continuous improvement of lab process or characterization methods
Customer Collaboration
The Successful candidate:
  • Partners with customers to understand needs, collaborate on design of testing plan, and efficiently delivers quality testing results.

  • Connecting with customers to understand test needs.
  • Efficiently completes high priority requests at the earliest and meets customer timelines.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in science or engineering.
  • Travel: 5-10%
EXPERIENCE:
  • Hands-on aptitude and flexibility to work in service organization supporting changing needs of innovation partners, ability to prioritize the top business needs.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software such as BobCAD to program CNC cutting machine desirable.
  • Proficiency employing typical productivity software such as MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets
  • Working knowledge of lab workflow / Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) preferred not required.
  • Ability to pay attention to details and sometimes perform repetitive work
