JOB DESCRIPTION
Department: TUMOR REGISTRY
Position Title: TUMOR REGISTRAR II
Supervisor: Cancer Registry Manager

POSITION GOAL:
Compiles and maintains database of hospital patients diagnosed and treated for cancer to provide data for physicians and research studies by performing the following duties.

Education:
Prefer graduate from an approved Medical Records program or related discipline.
Experience:
One (1) year of tumor registry or related experience.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Abstracts and reports all eligible cancer cases according the the American College of Surgeons guidelines.
2. Abstracts and reports all eligible cancer cases to the State of Texas as required.
3. Contacts discharged patients, physicians, and hospitals through letters, phone calls and office visits to maintain registry with follow-up information such as vital and cancer status.
4. Coordinates the weekly tumor conferences and the quarterly cancer committee meetings.

All employees will be held accountable for attending training regarding the Code of Conduct program at least annually.
6. Maintains follow-up rates of 80% or greater for all analytic patients from the cancer registry reference date and 90% or greater follow-up for all analytic patients diagnosed within the last five years.
7. Orders supplies as needed.
8. Participates in an ongoing improvement program for cancer patients and through national reporting agencies.
9. Performs other duties assigned by Director or Supervisor.
10. Performs payroll duties (timekeeper).
11. Provides data to reporting agencies, physicians, and the hospital.
12. Reviews hospital records to identify and compile patient data for use in cancer management program and to comply with government regulations.
13. Reviews hospital records, abstracts and codes information such as demographic characteristics, site, date of initial contact, and enters data into computer.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS:
Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other clinical disciplines in making decisions regarding patient care. Works with professional and non-professional employees of the hospital and with physicians, patients, and their families.
OUTSIDE RELATIONSHIPS:
Has adopted and exhibits customer service behaviors. Learns and performs customer service scripts, as instructed, with patients, families, co-workers and physicians.
