In January 2016, MetLife announced a plan to pursue the separation of a substantial portion of its U.S. Retail segment. Once separated, the new business will be called Brighthouse Financial.

A senior level individual contributor who, in addition to performing all the duties of the Underwriting Consultant, appraises and underwrites the larger, more complex applications for life insurance up to assigned approval limits



  • Appraises and underwrites complex applications for individual life insurance up to assigned approval limits
  • Effectively communicates adverse findings to field force, and supports underwriting courses of actions
  • Performs policy issue responsibilities that meet compliance and suitability regulations and result in accurately issued policies
  • May have authority to co-sign on cases for less experienced underwriters
  • Represents Life New Business at Brighthouse Financial business functions and industry meetings


  • 5 to 10 years of underwriting experience
  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent business training
  • Very strong knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures, reinsurance, reinsurance manuals, and guidelines dealing with risk analysis
  • Excels at underwriting impaired risks
  • Very strong understanding of medical terminology, human biology and anatomy
  • Educational pursuits toward industry designation programs such as; FLMI, ALU, or American College
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to influence.
