The Manager, Operations, provides leadership, cross-functional development and technical expertise to operations and administrative support personnel in various stages of team development in the manufacturing of Durham live virus vaccine products. They are responsible for the operations teams, process equipment and all activities affecting them while maximizing the potential of all team members, fostering an environment that allows for progressive, continuous improvement of skills and honest, open feedback, and ensuring team members have the tools available to them to accomplish the team's mission statement.
•Manages individual contributors for the Varicella Bulk Facility (VBF) shop floor.
•Contributes to the performance and results of a department.
•Adapts departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges.
•Decisions are guided by policies, procedures and business plan; receives guidance from manager.
•Assists the team with the development of objectives and ensures alignment with site goals.
•Applies management skills to align staff activities with department objectives.
•Understands and applies regulatory/compliance requirements relative to their role.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
•Manages technicians in the various Varicella Bulk Facility suites to meet production targets for compliance, supply, strategy, and profit plan according to company, federal and other countries compliance standards.
•Develops people through talent management, performance reviews, and employee development plans.
•Develops and foster a safety culture in the operating units.
•Troubleshoots equipment problems, identifies need for new equipment and/or modifications to existing equipment to optimize throughput and reduce process cycle times.
•Ensures technicians maintain qualification on all applicable equipment.
•Facilitates focus on continuous improvement activities.
•Oversees the coordination of resources to implement suggestions/ideas of merit.
•Manages the team's adherence to Merck Production System (MPS) metrics, design standards and performance utilizing downtime tracking, MOE, SMED, and other available tools.
•Performs special projects as assigned by Manager.
•Attends departmental and team meetings focused on equipment/process improvement.
•Serves as operations representative for technical group discussion.
•Participates in Walk Through of IPT (Integrated Process Team), and in plant tours as needed.
•Provides input review and approval for atypical, observation, and process capability investigations.
•Reviews and approves safety investigations.
•Participates in internal and external audits and inspections.
•Identifies quality-related trends and facilitates implementation of corrective actions.
•Approves expense charges and purchase orders of direct reports.
•Determines appropriate work centers/staffing for new products, and provides input into development of capital plans.
•Uses existing procedures to solve routine or standard problems.
•Utilizes Merck Manufacturing System methodologies to determine root cause and develop corrective actions.

•Accountable for the performance of the work group.
•Makes decisions that are guided by policies and procedures and impact the team's ability to meet performance objectives

•Reports to Associate Director.
•Manages and interacts with employees within own department.
•Frequent interaction with peers from other departments.
•Interacts with representatives from regulatory agencies.
•Interacts with IPT support functions.

Education Minimum Requirement:
•Bachelor's degree required.
Required Experience and Skills:
•Strong motivator, energetic, and team-oriented.
•Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, technical aptitude, and problem solving skills.
•Strong team skills, including the ability to coach/develop work teams, provide training, motivate/empower others, and resolve conflict.
•Must be flexible and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic production environment.
•Must be goal oriented and able to manage risks.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Willingness to work 2-2-3 shift schedule. Position may be assigned to either night or day shift.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
•0- 5 years coaching/supervisory experience.
•Minimum 0-10 years experience in a manufacturing role in an FDA regulated environment.
•Previous experience in bulk vaccine production including cell culture, inoculation, growth, harvest and/or purification.
•Six Sigma belt certification.
