ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This hands-on position will support JCI Residential and Light Commercial products manufactured in our Unitary Products Group Line of Business, through testing warranty return components to identify root cause of failure. The main objective of this position is to provide factual technical information to the Global Supplier Quality group regarding the mechanism of failure and potential root cause of failure for field return components. The Failure Analysis Engineer will work with Suppliers, Global Supplier Quality, Engineering, Plant Quality and Technical Services to design, document and carry-out analysis of field returned components.

  • Responsible for creating test plans, documenting and performing various analyses on components to identify root cause. Meet with any/all groups to disseminate and agree upon analysis plans.
  • Upon analysis completion, create a formal failure analysis report of the data and communicate findings to the Global SQE and other groups as needed (Technical Services, Engineering, Quality, Supplier, etc.).
  • Work with suppliers to schedule workshops to perform analysis on returned parts, as needed.
  • Coordinate third party analysis (e.g. metallurgical, eddy current, water quality, etc.) when required.
  • Generate and communicate warranty component return metrics.
  • Maintain calibration of analysis equipment.
  • Perform daily 5S activities to keep area clean, organized and safe.
  • Perform additional task assigned by the Supplier Quality Manager.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires 10 - 15% travel

Job Qualifications:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • BS EE/ME, or a combination of education and related experience.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience in failure analysis to the component level (direct work experience in the testing of electrical and/or mechanical components used in HVAC/R equipment would be a plus).
  • A strong background in component analysis, with use of a variety of test instruments (including but not limited to multimeters, scopes, pressure and vacuum gauges, etc.).
  • Ability to troubleshoot electronic components at the board level.
  • Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot HVAC/R equipment and systems that they are applied in (e.g. pumping systems, cooling towers, etc.)
  • Must be capable of using various systems within the organization (SAS, AS 400, Engineering Drawings, BOMs, Specifications, Descriptions, etc.).
  • Must be proficient in Technical Writing and in using Microsoft Office tools (Access, Excel, Word, etc.) to create Failure Analysis Reports and accompanying documentation.
  • Must be capable of using various test equipment (e.g. gauges, simulators, test boxes, multimeters, curve tracer, oscilloscope, etc.).
  • Individual must be proficient at using the 8D corrective action process.
